Texas Defense Covers the Cracks in Neyland Escape
Hi and welcome to another edition of Right
on Rangers Live, coming at you in the
fourth quarter, five and a half minutes left.
Texas leading Tennessee 20 to 10, and they
just accentuate that lead a little further with
a nice touchdown drive to really eliminate a
lot of clock here.
It hasn't been pretty, but you know what,
you're on the road, you're in SEC play,
you got other teams in the state losing
to lesser SEC opponents, it's hard to complain
too much.
Hard to complain too much.
You up double digits on the road in
Knoxville, Neyland Stadium, against the number 14 team
in the country.
Is there a lot to clean up here?
A hundred percent.
I think the defense, I can't say there's
a lot of negatives to claim for them.
The special teams unit gave up seven, defense
is not allowed a touchdown today.
I mean, look, the defense is championship level
at this point.
I think the argument is against the offense
solely, but nevertheless, the offense comes through there
with its biggest drive of the game to
put the rain, excuse me, to put the
Longhorns up by double digits there.
Very impressive drive.
Arch Manning, very uneven today.
He's made some incredible passes, but he has
also looked a little bit lost at times.
Tennessee defense has been bringing the pressure basically
all night long.
And so you definitely have not been helped
out in that regard.
Arch has had a few clean pockets, but
especially in the second half, a lot of
pressure.
They found a way.
The game is not over yet.
We still have five and a half minutes
left to go here.
Texas is going to be kicking off to
Tennessee here in just a few moments coming
out of the commercial break, but we're going
to see if we can't finish this thing
out.
Appreciate all you guys hanging out here at
Right on Rangers.
We cover everything Texas Longhorns during the college
football season.
We cover a lot of Texas sports as
well.
A lot of you may be popping in.
I have watched a lot of the Rangers
lives, a lot of the Rangers shows.
Look, either way, we thank you so much
for choosing Right on Rangers for all of
you Texas Longhorns, Texas Rangers, Dallas Cowboys, Dallas
Mavericks content.
We've got a lot going on this fall,
man.
You've got college football in full force.
You've got NFL going.
We got the Brazil game tomorrow.
Cowboys playing.
The Rangers are on life support right now
with their season, need a little bit of
help from Houston.
A lot going on in the Texas sports
world right now, and we love every minute
of it.
Thank you for hanging out.
Appreciate you guys.
Look, Texas, at this point, you got to
accentuate the defense here.
130 yards total for Tennessee's offense, and they're
averaging 2.2 yards of play.
This defense has been incredible.
I don't think you can really say enough.
There's so much crap that gets laid at
the feet of Arch Manning, and the defense,
I feel like, I put a video out
on this earlier in the week.
The defense, I feel like, automatically just gets
overshadowed.
The criticism is so heavy on Arch at
times.
You just don't give enough flowers to what
this defensive unit is able to do.
Today, you have, again, just to be clear,
130 yards in the fourth quarter.
We're almost over halfway through the fourth quarter
at this point, and the defense is only
allowed 130 yards. We'll see what happens here.
Maybe you soften up a little bit.
I wouldn't.
Even though you're up 10, I would not
be softening up a little bit here.
Unfortunately, Gianni Spetic going to kick this one
out of bounds, and it looks like Tennessee
is going to get pretty good field position.
Amanda, what's good?
Appreciate the comment.
Look, the Simmons penalty, I do think, in
general, let me say this.
In general, I don't love the overemphasis that
the NCAA, even the NFL, has put on
policing celebrations.
I definitely think that they have gone a
little bit too far one direction.
That being said, I think the penalty by
Simmons is ridiculous in that spot.
I don't know what they've been told.
Don't know how much it's been drilled in
their heads.
What exactly you can and can't do.
Nevertheless, not a classy move by Colin.
To his credit, he's responded.
He's responded in this ball game.
I did see some people, he needs to
be benched the rest of the game.
I mean, look, this is a team sport,
and there is a place for punishment.
Even within a game, you're off a series,
you're off a quarter, you're off a half.
I'm really not a big believer for something
like that, benching him for the rest of
the game.
That only really hurts the team.
I don't know.
I know some people might totally disagree with
me.
I don't think that is crazy new school
either.
Yeah, I mean, maybe in high school or
middle school football, your coach would bench you
for the rest of the game.
When the stakes are this high, it's different.
It just is.
And I think they handled it well.
They pulled him out.
They definitely had to miss some of the
time out there on one of the drives.
I forget what point in the game it
was, but I don't think that Colin Simmons
needed to be benched for what he did.
He was penalized.
I'm sure he was given a stern talking
to by the coaching staff and by teammates,
to be fair.
But yeah, the bench Colin Simmons crowd, I
don't get that.
I think that's just hurting the team in
general.
There's a time and a place to send
a message here.
And I don't think right now on the
road, you're battling in this environment.
I don't think it's the right time.
Handle it at practice.
He's got to do some gassers.
If he's got to do a little more
running, sure.
But you don't do that to the whole
team on the road battling in Knoxville.
Christy, what's good?
Yeah, we'll obviously be mixing and matching.
I'm sure a little bit.
The Rangers are going to be playing here
in about an hour.
Yes, Josh Young did break his hand.
All right, fourth and three game on the
line right here.
We will see.
Ball is snapped.
He's trying to run.
He's not going to get anywhere.
Longhorns are going to sack Brandon and that
is a turnover on downs.
That should do it here in Knoxville.
Texas will be tasked with bleeding out the
clock, but the defense once again stands strong
and it looks though Texas will remain undefeated.
Arch Manning and company going to need to
bleed this one out.
What a performance.
Colin Simmons just was talking about him.
He's come back with a vengeance in this
ballgame.
You have Kanu.
You have so many different guys to talk
about that have stepped up and just suffocated
this Tennessee offense.
Totally suffocated this Tennessee offense, man.
136 total yards.
If Texas can get this all the way
down to zeros without any garbage yards, more
garbage yards being acquired.
What an impressive outing on the road here.
Look, it's a long way to go until
the college football playoff, but you start stacking
wins like this in SEC play, you definitely
get people's attention.
There's going to be a lot of haters.
A lot of people saying that Texas is
a pretender, a fraud.
They don't look that great.
They don't look like a number one team.
You just got to remember you have to
just win ballgames at some point, don't you?
There's a lot of teams that are losing
ballgames, but you know what?
The offense looks a little bit better.
The defense, there's not a lot of defenses
looking better than this one right now, though.
You can crap on Arch Manning all you
want.
There's not a lot of defenses in college
football that are looking better than the one
that is playing in burnt orange.
Tennessee, I think they lost the real UT
though, JBJ.
Tennessee, definitely losing the real UT discussion today.
That is for sure.
Appreciate all you guys hanging out.
Kachow, yeah, I'm with you on this.
We were talking about Colin Simmons.
You can't bench Colin Simmons in that moment.
I know there's a lot of different people
that follow the channel, follow the account.
I had some people DMing me, man, they
should bench him.
I'm just like, hey, it's not going to
happen.
It's not middle school football.
It's not high school football, man.
That is an old school, middle school, high
school football mentality.
You're doing things a little bit differently at
this level.
Honestly, as someone that's coached at low levels,
even at the middle school, high school level,
I'm probably not benching a guy for the
whole game for what Colin Simmons did.
Do you take him out for a few
plays?
Do you take him out for a series?
Sure.
But do you hurt the entire team by
benching him?
No, I don't think that is a smart
move by any stretch.
We keep on going.
Real UT, surely not Tennessee, especially after today.
I know a lot of y'all like
to go to that.
It's not even a debate.
It's just something that at this point, people
on the losing side are going to say,
just to try and cut a little bit.
Come on now, scoreboard, scoreboard.
It's like the ultimate truth serum.
Nobody, when you say UT, nobody, I've said
this so many times, nobody thinks Tennessee except
for people that are from that area.
Nobody hears UT, even the A&M fans.
Even the A&M fans hear UT and
they'll be quick to correct you to TU.
Not even A&M fans hear UT and
think Tennessee.
Come on now.
You say UT to an A&M fan,
they're more worried about correcting you to TU
than they are about Tennessee.
Garen freaking T.
I don't even know that this is debatable,
but yeah, I'm sure in Tennessee and in
Kentucky, some surrounding areas, you've got a few
people.
You've got a few people that hear UT
and think Tennessee.
It's not many.
It's definitely not the majority.
We'll say that.
Carson, good game to you.
Tennessee still got a road out ahead of
them.
That is for sure.
They have, looking at their schedule, they've got
some good opponents coming up.
Auburn, that's always an interesting game.
Arkansas is pretty down this year.
Alabama on October 17th is going to be
pretty big.
A&M plays Tennessee on November 14th.
Then LSU, that's going to be a stretch
right there, man, when Tennessee has to play
A&M and LSU back to back.
We'll see what A&M does.
We will see what A&M does.
They obviously lost to Kentucky.
Pretty bad loss.
Looked pretty ugly.
Who knows how they are going to hold
up the rest of the way.
I think the jury's out on that.
That's for sure.
Tennessee with a freshman quarterback.
He's got a lot of talent, but I
think it's going to be hard to really
ride with Tennessee as a legit contender.
You've got a long way to go for
Brandon.
He looked good today.
At times, he really can use his legs
well.
A little bit too much urgency to run
when things would break down.
It's hard when you've got the Texas defense
bearing down on you, but it just felt
like he bailed a lot today.
He was getting hit around a little bit,
too.
I think, though, you've got a good foundation.
If you're a Tennessee fan with Brandon, he
definitely has some tools.
You've just got to lock things in between
the ear holes, and you also have to
continue to get him more and more experience.
I think he could be something special.
He was definitely a guy that I had
circled coming into this game.
Clearly, the Longhorns defense, Will Muschamp and company
did as well.
Let's see.
What do we got?
Scott, good morning to you, too, baby.
That's an interesting comment there, man.
Notre Dame, I don't rate Notre Dame very
much.
I'm sure that'll make your morning a whole
lot better.
Notre Dame, I'm just, I'm never convinced on
Notre Dame, but maybe they'll surprise some people
this year.
Seems like they always find a way to
crap the bed at the end.
We'll see.
Should be interesting.
Hey, let's go Longhorns, indeed.
Hook'em.
Yes, sir.
All y'all on TikTok, thanks for hanging
out.
Couldn't beat Georgia, so they just took him
off the schedule.
Notre Dame, yeah.
That is what happened, huh?
I don't even keep up with all that
stuff.
Notre Dame cried about Georgia, took him off
the schedule.
Scott, is that what happened?
Didn't want to lose?
It's too bad.
I'm glad that we talked about this.
I'm glad that Sark didn't take the ball
and go home.
He played the Ohio State game, and he
made it a point to stick with it,
to ride it out.
Doesn't mean that maybe in the future with
scheduling they're not going to do something different,
but I'm really glad Sark decided to play
that game.
Even if we would have lost that game,
I still think it's the right thing to
do.
I told you guys, just for the of
Austin and for the fans, for the students,
it really is just a special game and
a special atmosphere and environment.
I talked to a lot of people that
went to that Ohio State-Texas game, and
clearly the win makes it a lot better.
I don't think anybody's denying that, but a
lot of people talked to me about the
electricity just before kickoff, and outside of the
stadium.
You know, you cancel the Ohio State game,
and that all goes away.
Not really, I think, good for college football
in general.
I think it is a little bit more
indicative of the system, the playoff and the
committee and all that, but you definitely don't
want to see these big matchups go away.
Yeah, I mean, look, Mark Texas of late
definitely has not finished things off well down
the stretch.
You know, you have the Ohio State game
a couple years ago, Quinn Ewers.
Yeah, you definitely have not had Texas steal
the deal since VY back in that championship,
man, against USC.
It's been a while.
It's hard in college football.
It really is.
A lot of teams, not easy to win
a championship.
That's why you got to appreciate them when
they come.
We'll keep rolling.
Thank you for everybody hanging out.
Yeah, look, Kachow, I'm with you.
I would have liked to have seen a
little bit more aggressiveness with the play calling
their comments said four minutes left past the
ball.
At least would have thought you could have
dialed up a couple of high probability, high
percentage throws start going ultra conservative, choosing to
bleed some clock Tennessee using the timeout.
So I mean, at this point, you definitely
do not have any opportunity to stop the
clock except for that two minute warning.
Yeah, in that series, though, it's going play
by play.
Brandon is going to hit a receiver just
short of the first down marker.
I mean, it was all Archie, they're getting
sacked or Russia's Cooper was Cooper Rush twice
and then Arch got sacked.
Maybe they were going to throw on that
third down.
Maybe.
Tick, tick, tick, Brandon steps back.
He checks it down and we're actually going
to have did he catch it?
No, he dropped it.
We're going to have 31 here.
Thoughts on that Simmons penalty rising tides and
a lot of people have asked me about
this so far.
So I'm sorry for any repetition here.
Long story short, I think it's a stupid
move by Colin, especially if you've been prepped.
And I've got to think these guys are
prepped on what you can do, what you
can't do.
I can only assume that this glass half
full trying to give Sark some credit.
I can only assume they go through.
Here's what you can do.
Here's what you cannot do.
Texas defense is going to stop Tennessee here.
It's going to be fourth and one with
the clock still running.
I do think in general, the NCAA and
the NFL could spend a little less time
policing the celebrations.
That being said, I think it's a dumb
move by Simmons shouldn't have done it.
I think he'll admit that to after the
game, if given an opportunity.
And it's a lot easier when you win
the game ultimately.
So hopefully that can happen here.
It's looking pretty good for the horns right
now.
And then Simmons had a monster game moving
forward.
We also discussed, you know, some fans to
talk around social media a little bit, at
least the people that I interact with.
You had some notions of, you know, should
you bench him for, you know, the rest
of the game or for the half, like,
you know, kind of the old school mentality.
You know, I've always said this is a
team sport.
You have to, as a coach, you're Sark,
you have to consider the context, you know,
there's a time and a place.
I was never a big fan and I've
never been a big fan of making the
entire team suffer.
I just don't think that it really teaches
a great lesson.
It's not the lesson that you think it
is when you're benching a guy to make
the entire team be at a disadvantage.
You're on the road in a hostile environment.
I think that the series that he took
off, I know he took off a few
plays.
I think that's plenty.
Maybe you do some running in practice, something
like that.
But, you know, putting your whole entire team
in a worse situation because of one impulsive
decision, it's not like he slugged anybody.
You know, I mean, it's not like what
he did warranted an ejection.
I mean, I would be very quick to
rail against anybody that's saying, hey, he got
a penalty.
He didn't get ejected, but let's throw him
out of the game.
Let's bench him.
That doesn't make a lot of sense.
We keep rolling.
Um, let's see.
We have a number of different things that
we can go to.
We got the two minute warning.
I believe.
Let me update the ticker here.
What are we doing?
We got some old Ranger stuff going on
here.
I got to fix this.
I mean, look, we'll be doing the Ranger
show a little bit later on, but let's
get this fixed up.
Here we go.
Rangers game is delayed.
Nate, you're a real one for that.
Thank you.
I have been totally locked in on Longhorn.
So I did not even realize rain delay.
It's too bad.
I was really hoping we could just go
back to back here, but I guess we'll
have a little bit of time in between
shows, maybe for the best, maybe for the
best.
There we go.
Roy, what's good?
Thanks for the comment.
Bunch of y'all who are hanging out.
I know have followed since we started the
show.
Thank you to everybody that has followed along.
And if you haven't hit that follow button
or that subscribe button yet, let's do it,
man.
This is what we do every Saturday.
We hang out, talk college football.
We'll be here tomorrow talking NFL.
We also cover the Rangers, Texas Rangers, that
is during the MLB season that's wrapping up
this weekend, playoff baseball starting next week.
So let's come back and do this again
next weekend.
That'll be a lot of fun.
Texas, they actually their schedule moving forward.
Is it the bye week next week?
Yeah.
So they have bye week and then they
have Red River bye week next week.
I knew Red River was next, but I
just didn't know when you were going to
get that bye.
I knew it was either before or after
Red River.
So they will get a couple of weeks
to game plan for Oklahoma and then Red
River is upon us.
Cotton Bowl, baby.
Should be good.
I'm excited.
I'm excited.
Austin, absolutely.
The AL West teams right now in Major League
Baseball do not feel like winning a division
title.
That's for sure.
Oh man, that is for sure.
All right.
Hey, if you're just joining us right now,
Texas up 20 to 10, you do have
Tennessee trying to make it interesting here.
They have the ball, they are driving.
And so we will see how this one
finishes out.
Defense has been stout today.
Man, you would have loved if Texas could
have found a way to really ice that
game and preserve that 136 yard number that
the defense has put up.
They've only allowed 136 total yards of offense
to the volunteers today.
Really, really impressive.
They have just continued to show out every
single game.
And with all the talk about Arch Manning,
I feel like this defense always gets shorted
in terms of the flowers that they should
be receiving.
And it's going to happen again this weekend.
It's just going to happen again.
You're going to see a lot of arch
talk, just not enough talk about the defense.
I hope to be wrong because that's what
should happen.
Arch is absolutely a guy, a player with
talent.
I don't think there's any disputing that he's
got the tools.
It's not all coming together right now, but
I think we need to be done waiting
on Arch to become this superstar.
I really do.
I think that is kind of the continued
issue here is we're constantly waiting on Arch
Manning to be the superstar player.
And of course the hype determines that.
I do think the media hyped this guy
up to no end to where if he's
not a superstar, it's a failure.
I do think though, for the Longhorns fans
that have actually watched every game of Arch
Manning, I think he's kind of telling you
what he is.
Like he's a guy that definitely can wow
you with certain plays.
He had a few beautiful throws today.
He can do some things with his feet,
but he's got some limitations.
Now, can he develop?
Can he continue to get better?
I don't think there's any denying that.
I think he definitely still has a higher
ceiling than what he's showing.
But in terms of how we cover the
Texas teams that he's on, I think we
have to stop seeing Texas as so one
-dimensional with Arch.
I mean, this team has won ballgames in
a multitude of ways.
They've won it with high scoring.
They did that against Texas State.
Granted, it's Texas State.
You saw them do it very, very well
on the ground against Ohio State.
They scored well.
And then you also saw them do it
with defense.
And they've done that again today.
You've had an incredible defensive effort.
Last week was incredible as well.
It is just really sad that the defense
isn't more of the superstar, but that's how
it works with college football.
You're going to gravitate towards the quarterbacks, towards
the stars.
But the defense needs to be getting most
of the shine on this team.
It's incredible.
The media, it doesn't matter, it doesn't matter
the Austin media.
I'm not worried about the Austin media.
I think we're talking about the larger sports
media as a whole, aren't we?
I'm not worried about Kirk Bohls and all
those guys.
I know Kirk is a Houston guy, but
I'm not worried about all of what's going
on in Austin with how they're reporting on
him.
It's really a lot of the larger shows
that you see, Fox Sports, ESPN, that kind
of stuff, that have hyped this up.
And look, I got to be honest with
you.
I don't think that everyone in Austin covering
this team has been immune to not over
-hyping Arch Manning at any given point.
I think you've seen that on a number
of different occasions, especially when they first got
Arch Manning to commit.
And as he began to get some different
snaps and get some different plays during the
Quinn Ewers years.
I think that Arch, at this point, he's
got enough time out there on the field
that you're able to draw some conclusions.
And my best conclusion is the ceiling has
still not been reached, but I think he's
shown you who he is.
There's been enough games where I think you
can say that.
And I just have kind of stopped expecting
Arch to come out and have this 350
-yard, 100-yard rushing game.
I feel like a lot of people are
still waiting on that from him.
When's he going to throw for 350 and
have 100-plus on the ground?
I just don't know if that's going to
happen.
I don't know if that's going to be
his game.
Michelle, I've actually, I don't know if we
just must cover different people, but we must
follow different people.
I feel like the Longhorns fans that I
connect with on here a lot are pretty
critical of Arch.
Maybe we're talking about the casuals, but I
feel like there's a number of people I
interact with.
I was seeing a lot of it today
that are very critical, hyper-critical of and
Longhorns fans.
But that's just me.
I know we all have a little bit
of a different experience with it.
So with that being said, we keep on
going.
I don't live in Austin, but Michelle, it
wouldn't matter.
This is the same thing as do you
go to the school?
It wouldn't matter where you live.
Can you physically talk to every single resident
of Austin?
No, you can't.
So it really doesn't matter.
I don't care if you live in Austin
or if you don't.
That doesn't make you more in tune with
what's going on.
We're not all talking to every resident and
every football fan of the Texas Longhorns, so
it wouldn't matter.
It's like people that tell me, I've watched
this team for 40 years, so I know
more than you.
What?
I live in Austin.
I live in Arlington, so I know more
about you than the Rangers.
What are we talking about?
What are we talking about?
Just because you live where the team plays
means nothing about what you have in terms
of a feel for the criticism or what
everybody thinks about this team.
I don't know.
I get a lot of that every single
time I don't get it.
Let's just make good arguments.
Let's not worry about how long we've been
following the team or whether or not you
live in the same place that the team
plays.
Just give me a point.
A point can't be I live there, so
I know.
It makes no sense.
Longhorns, speaking of making no sense, have just
made this game very, very interesting.
We'll see what happens here.
Not good.
Not not good.
Potential turnover here.
Tennessee, by the way, only down three.
I think we missed that.
I saw it, but I know we didn't
cover it.
20 to 17 at this point.
Longhorns holding on by a thread.
Austin, I don't know.
Comment here from Facebook.
I don't think Texas is going to be
able to hold the number one spot all
year.
Offense is abysmal.
It's going to be tough.
All right, what do we got?
I got to turn this up.
We got a flag on the play.
Heupel doesn't look happy, so this is probably
good for Texas.
Wow.
Tennessee recovers the onside kick.
Incredible.
Special teams really costing Texas today, unfortunately.
Really costing the Longhorns.
You have Tennessee scoring on a kick return,
and now you have this.
Offense definitely needs some blame for not closing
this one out and putting more pressure on
Tennessee.
They did have a nice score there in
the fourth quarter, but it's sad.
Defense is going to have to win this
game.
Got to feel like the defense is going
to pin their ears back here.
That's really bad.
Hats to the football.
You had a number of guys just standing
around there.
Brandon completes a nice pass there.
So many guys just standing around not getting
hats to the football.
You had him tied up on the legs,
and nobody was coming to help out.
That was just bad.
We'll see what happens here.
Fall on the 39-yard line of Texas,
so you've got an opportunity here for maybe
a long field goal if you're not able
to punch it in.
Tennessee could win this game.
We'll see what happens here.
They're going to review whether or not the
knee touched down.
They had a little pass over the middle.
Brandon found a pretty wide-open target, but
it looked like maybe the knee may have
gone down as the Texas defender had him
by.
Let's see.
Nope.
He wasn't down.
That should be pretty quick.
Keep on going.
Appreciate all you guys hanging out.
We're hanging by a thread here, trying to
finish out this game.
Knee is down there.
The first angle they showed, it didn't look
clear.
A little bit more clock will run off
here, but the Vols have all day long
right now to talk about what they're going
to do next.
Not a lot of time is going to
go off at this point.
They lose about seven total yards.
Ball was at the 39.
It's going to come back to the 46
-yard line of Texas.
Tennessee's got 46 yards to go, 46 for
a touchdown.
I don't know what the field goal kicker
is.
I don't know where he's at, but you
got to feel like they probably want to
get that down to about the 30, at
least, to feel confident about a field goal
try.
10-second runoff.
I forgot about that with the reversal.
They do the 10-second runoff, so it's
going to be a minute and two seconds
left here.
Plenty of time for Tennessee.
No timeouts, though.
If you can get a sack here, if
you can really sit them down in front
of the sticks, behind the sticks, that would
be ideal.
109 on the clock, and it's ticking.
Getting a little nervy here.
I'm not even going to lie to you
guys.
Texas showing pressure, and they're bringing it, man.
They are bringing the pressure.
They sack him.
They sack Brandon.
That could be catastrophic for the Volunteers.
They're going to need to get on the
ball quickly here.
It is a third and long.
What are we calling time?
Oh, we got an injury timeout, so that's
a runoff as well.
That's got to be a runoff, right?
Injury, so no timeouts.
You got a runoff, don't you?
Let's see.
That was a huge call by Muschamp.
It was much needed.
You just can't give a freshman quarterback with
the game on the line all day to
throw.
You know what?
If he makes a great read and beats
you, if somebody else in the secondary gets
beat by one of their wide receivers, so
be it.
You can't let this freshman quarterback sit back
and pick you apart, man.
That's way too comfortable.
They did that a bit on the last
drive.
Clearly, you're playing a little softer, trying to
keep everything in front of you and eliminate
time off the clock, but, man, you have
to put pressure when the game's on the
line on this quarterback.
You just have to.
Right now, injured linemen for the Volunteers, so
we have a little bit of a break
in the action here.
Appreciate all you guys coming out.
Roy, no, Muschamp is the defensive coordinator.
Colin plays on defense.
20-17, Texas leading Tennessee here on the road
in Knoxville.
We've got less than a minute left in
this ballgame.
We will see if this one can get
brought over the finish line by the Longhorns
defense.
We are at the 50-yard line, even
39, and clock should continue to start.
Here's a snap.
Brandon flushed out.
He's going to try and run it.
He gets stopped short of the first down
marker, but there is a flag on the
play.
Maybe hold?
Maybe a holding?
Can we get a holding?
It looked like a little dicey.
We're going to have another Tennessee injury.
We got a hold.
It looked like there was some holding going
on at the line of scrimmage.
You never know what they're going to call
with the game on the line, but that
is a big call.
When are we going to get some runoffs
here?
We got another injury.
Is this not a college rule?
I know it's an NFL rule.
We've got a penalty, a holding penalty, and
we've got an injury.
When are we running some time off the
clock?
Maybe that's just on Sundays.
That rule applies.
Yeah, Kanu, it looked like as Brandon was
escaping the backfield, man, that had it all
over it.
You definitely wanted to back him up.
I know fourth down, it would have been
fourth down in short, but Tennessee's trying to
kick a field goal here.
You want this to be as much field
backup as possible.
Here we go, 25 seconds and ticking.
Brandon sitting back there.
He does have a lot of time.
They are going to call a flag, man.
One of the Texas defenders got the face
mask.
We're going to be doing this again.
In some way, at least he had some
time killed off the clock, but it's going
to be automatic first down.
Time is your most precious commodity, though, at
this point.
It's a hurtful penalty, no doubt, but at
least you have a little time off.
That's just a bad mistake there by the
Longhorns.
Bad mistake.
You're just grasping at nothing, man.
So many mistakes today.
So many mistakes.
Texas right now, after that penalty, they have
11 penalties for 115 yards on the day.
45-yard line here.
Texas showing a lot of pressure.
They only send about...
We got a false start here, man.
They were showing the pressure.
They were bringing about five total.
That'll be first and 15 now.
115 yards and penalties.
That is wild, man.
Absolutely wild.
21 seconds still left on the clock.
We're finishing out this game.
Appreciate all y'all hanging out.
Longhorns clinging to a 20-17 lead with 20
seconds left.
Brandon in the shotgun.
Takes it back.
Texas not rushing many.
Bad throw.
I don't think he caught that.
They're going to need to...
It's actually better if he did catch it,
to be honest.
Looked like it hit the ground.
This might be the last play of the
game.
They got to get this in the end
zone.
And it is over.
It is over.
Looked like it was potentially going to be
dicey there for a second.
There was a man open, but Longhorns had
three guys in the area.
Somebody threw a beanbag on the field.
I thought that it was a flag.
I don't know if any of you caught
that.
It looked like somebody, one of the fans,
threw a beanbag or something weird, a hacky
sack or something on the field.
I thought they were throwing a late flag
there for a minute.
That's why I was kind of letting it
play out.
I'm like, is this going to be pass
interference in the end zone?
Wow.
20 to 17.
Not sure what's going on here.
Yeah, they're kind of delaying the handshakes a
little bit.
Just wanted to make sure we didn't miss
anything.
But this game is final.
Appreciate everybody hanging out.
The Longhorns get a win in Knoxville.
It wasn't easy because, of course, it can't
be easy.
We know Texas, over the last several years,
loves to make it interesting at the end
of ball games.
The quintessential example of this has to be
the Arizona state playoff game from a couple
of years ago.
Who could forget, man?
Arch Manning, Holly Rowe interview.
Here we go.
This should be good.
Arch Manning and Holly Rowe.
Yeah.
Arch, good job, man.
Defense all the way.
Special teams was bad.
Offense was bad.
Defense owned this one, man.
And what a stand at the end there.
I don't think you can really say enough
about what they did.
Today, you had a really uneven performance from
Arch.
You had some great throws from him.
You had some really, really bad throws and
just bad plays in general.
The offensive line wasn't sharp either.
A lot of pressure on Arch in the
second half, especially.
But the defense has got to get all
the love today.
I mean, they shut down Tennessee, even on
that last drive after you have the onside
kick recovery.
Horns up, man.
Hook them.
It's good to get a win.
We can be nitpicky now.
We can break down everything that we want.
But you got to win.
You didn't lose this ball game.
And this is definitely one that I think
you're proud of.
Looking back, yeah, a lot of us that
are diehards, that enjoy watching every single down
and snap.
Yeah, we're going to remember how uneven this
was at times.
But at the end of the season, when
the committee is doing their thing and when
we're all reflecting, you're going to look back
on this and be thankful you won a
game in Knoxville.
20-17 against a top 15 opponent.
This can't be underscored enough.
It's not like Tennessee was coming into this
ball game 0-3.
They were 3-0 at the top 15
ranking.
Hook them to all you guys.
Appreciate you.
Thank you for the people that have followed,
by the way.
We cover a lot of Texas sports.
Longhorns are one of them.
College football, Saturdays.
We cover the Texas Rangers.
You can see some of my stuff in
the background, I'm sure.
But I appreciate you hanging out.
Longhorns win this one, 20-17.
We are going to give you all of
our breakdowns here in the post game.
But of course, we want to hear from
you guys too.
Feel free to drop a comment, drop a
question.
Would love to hear from you and your
hottest take on this game.
Some of your big takeaways as well.
We'll try and get to everything we possibly
can of substance.
But the defense leads the way.
You had, by the way, in terms of
sacks, you had 10 total sacks.
Colin Simmons had five sacks today.
Longhorns sacked Brandon 10 total times.
10 times.
That is crazy.
I posted, I tweeted this out.
By the way, if you don't follow me
over on X, I'm on Facebook and on
threads and pretty much everything.
Honestly, I do a lot of multi-posting
to a bunch of different platforms.
But during the game, I always react live
to different things going on.
And one of the things I said after
the Colin Simmons penalty, I said, man, he
better have the monster game of his life
after this.
And sure enough, he came to play.
After that penalty, dude locked in.
And in a major way, five sacks for
Colin Simmons.
Five sacks.
He was a monster.
Him and Biles.
I mean, Biles had 13 tackles and led
the team today.
Biles and Simmons in tandem, freaking monsters.
I mean, those guys are insane.
Biles, just an amazing, incredible pickup by Sark
and his team.
But pairing Simmons and Biles on this defense
just feels unfair.
It feels straight up unfair.
You've got the biggest reasons, in my opinion,
why this game was won.
The pressure that Biles and Simmons were able
to put on this Tennessee offense.
I mean, yes, you can definitely highlight McDonald.
He had eight tackles out of the secondary
today.
Had a pass deflection.
You had a number of other guys.
Littleton had a pass deflection.
January had a pass deflection.
You had some guys in the secondary doing
their thing as well.
But we all know most football games are
won up front.
And that is exactly how this game was
won.
The Texas defensive front overwhelmed the Tennessee Volunteers
offense and Faizon Brandon in particular.
Brandon's definitely got some tools.
He got loose a couple of times today.
Definitely makes you nervous when that happens, when
he gets outside the pocket.
But he has still got a little ways
to go yet.
Freshman quarterback.
Longhorns were able to rattle him a little
bit back there.
He really started tucking the ball a lot.
And that's what happens when you get pressure
on young quarterbacks.
Arch is an example of that too.
I don't think Arch is immune to that.
When you can get pressure on quarterbacks like
Arch, on quarterbacks like Brandon, especially Brandon being
his first year in college football, once you
start hearing those footsteps, now you're taken off
by default.
And you're not going through your reads.
You're not going through your progressions.
And I think you saw that played out
today in multiple different series and drives where
the game was on the line.
Andrew, I'm with you.
Thank God for Colin Simmons.
Yes, sir.
I know it's been a topic we've covered
a couple of different times, but I saw
a number of Longhorns fans wanting to see
Simmons benched.
Mike, you can't hurt the team like that.
Make Simmons do a bunch of gassers at
practice, man.
Make him do some bear crawls or something.
Don't hurt the entire team on the road
in Knoxville.
You prepared, you worked hard this entire week,
and you're going to bench him for the
rest of the game because of one impulsive
play, which he was already penalized for?
Yeah, I didn't understand anyone wanting to see
Simmons gone.
I know we got some old school Longhorns
fans, but still.
Still.
I just am not a fan of anyone
that was advocating for Simmons to miss time
and Sark, you know, not doing his job
correctly because he's not punishing Colin Simmons.
Come on now.
Come on now.
This is actually a crazy old hat.
I got this a while ago, man.
One of my friends gave it to me.
Everybody always gives me a hard time.
I mean, look, the baseball team, I feel
like reps the T a lot more than
the football does, but man, I like it.
You got the Texas flag over here on
the side.
It's old, doesn't fit perfectly, but man, this
is one of my go-tos, that's for
sure.
Simmons, the one that saved them, I'm with
you on that TikTok comment there.
He absolutely saved them.
Like Simmons, he, I think got probably challenged.
I think he got lit up a little
bit by some of the leaders on the
team, by some of the coaching staff.
And he responded.
That's what I love too is you didn't
see Simmons like go into pout mode and
not that I expected that he would, but
you didn't see Simmons shut down, man.
He rose to the challenge.
He knew he messed up and he decided
to have one of the games of his
life.
Great stuff from him.
Comment from Bino here, Sarkisian needs to stop
letting up when they're up.
It's been a problem.
I feel like Sark's entire career at the
university of Texas.
I mean, I brought up the Arizona state
game, playoff game with Skattebo and what Leavitt
and all them.
I mean, that was another quintessential example of
letting your foot off the gas.
You were up by 17, what going into
the fourth quarter or whatever it was.
And you just got really conservative.
You got really, really conservative and you see
Texas do that.
And I know Sark is trying to have
a balanced attack.
He's, he's trying to drain some clock.
I get it, but this team does have
closing issues.
The defense does not have closing issues.
It does feel like the offense has big
time issues, closing out football games.
I don't feel it.
I know this is totally eye test.
So somebody helped me out.
I maybe feel like against a lesser opponent,
you know, your Texas States, you know, your
UTSs, this might not apply, but against big
opponents like this, it feels rare that the
offense is actually closing out the game.
Like it feels like that drive where you
have that killer, this punch knockout, and you
totally ice four or five minutes in the
fourth quarter.
It doesn't feel like this team has that
a lot.
It feels like it's the defense making a
turnover, turnover on downs.
And then, you know, the offense takes over
with less than a minute left and kneels
it out.
It just doesn't feel like this offense gives
you a lot of those knockout drives with
five or six minutes to go.
Yeah.
Ronnie, I am definitely interested in looking a
little bit, a little bit more at the
offensive line play today.
I think it's easy just as you're reacting
live.
I don't think the offensive line had a
great game.
And in Arch Manning, if I could give
the offensive line a little bit of benefit
of the doubt, I do think Arch Manning
holds the ball too long sometimes.
Now there were certain plays where he was
overwhelmed pretty immediately, but I do feel like
Arch holds the ball way too long on
certain plays and is a little indecisive back
there.
And that doesn't help.
I do think the O-line is better
than last year, but they definitely did not
have their best game today.
That doesn't mean they were terrible.
They were awful, but I don't think they
had their best game today.
Scotty, what's good?
Comment.
Who wants to say it, but Arch is
too mentally slow?
Well out there, there's a lot going on.
Obviously Arch has plenty of experience.
I'll just stand by what I said.
I'll reiterate what I said.
I do feel like as you watch the
game and you watch Arch drop back to
pass, you know, there are times where he
has a really particular target in mind.
Like on the interception, he definitely had Coleman
in mind from the beginning.
And by the way, Coleman should have caught
that football.
We haven't even talked about this.
Cam Coleman should have 1000% caught that
football.
Immediately you've got everybody crapping on Arch.
Oh dude, you're throwing into double coverage.
The ball hit him right in the hands.
What are we talking about?
I don't care if it was thrown into
double coverage.
Arch hit Cam Coleman directly in the hands.
Coleman just got to fight for that football
a little bit, man.
You've just got to fight for that football.
Oh, crazy.
I really, really feel like that is a
great example.
A great example of how you instantly see
Arch become the center of attention when really
it should be somebody else as the focus.
After this game, Arch is going to be
under the microscope again.
Defense really needs to be the story here.
Arch on that throw, I don't think it
was overthrown at all.
It went right through his hands.
How could you say it's overthrown?
I mean, it's a 50-yard pass.
I mean, we're talking about like inches at
this point.
I mean, what are we doing here?
How could you say that was an overthrown
throw?
It literally was right here.
It was right at helmet slightly above eye
level.
It went right through his hands.
I have no clue how we can get
on Arch in that moment for it being
overthrown.
Cam Coleman got to go up and get
that football.
He's one of the highest, isn't he the
highest paid wide receiver in the game?
And you can't go up and get that
football?
To me, Cam Coleman, if you want to
go 50-50, go 50-50.
Don't sit around and tell me that that
is a majority Arch's fault.
The ball went right through his hands.
I just feel like Arch is just the
easy target at some point.
If you want to give Arch a little
bit of the blame, that's fine.
I guess the ball I think went right
through your best wide receiver's hands.
What more do you want Arch to do
there?
Pinpoint accuracy on a 50-yard throw?
Yeah, it's not by any means the most
like well-advised pass in the double coverage,
but that being said, you look at the
execution, it should have been a catch.
It should have been a catch.
I don't think Texas is going to move
at all, Scotty.
I think that is a big time overreaction.
Texas moves to number four or five.
There's no way Texas is going to drop
in the rankings at all after a game
like this.
You went on the road in Neyland Stadium,
in Knoxville.
There's no way Texas is dropping after this.
They're just not.
But can you argue who's better than them?
Maybe, but I would actually submit who is
better than them.
Who really is better than the Longhorns right
now that's actually proved it on the field?
I don't really think there's a lot of
teams that have played opponents better than what
Texas has at this point.
I mean, definitely want to just throw out
there.
You look around the top five.
There's not a lot of teams that have
played the caliber that Texas has.
Ole Miss, maybe you could throw up there,
but even Ole Miss beating LSU at home,
we're going to have to see how LSU
responds.
Ole Miss, I think, is maybe the only
one you could even say is in the
neighborhood.
But even then, Ole Miss didn't beat a
number one team.
Ohio State, number one team.
Ole Miss resume is going to go down
because of Louisville.
Hey, Texas 956, appreciate you.
I feel like that definitely is going to
start being taken into consideration, the opponents and
how they are doing moving forward.
I know that with Texas, though, they play
enough teams.
You're not going to have to nitpick how
Texas did against UTSA or Texas State.
You beat the number one team in the
country at home, and then you went on
the road and beat the number 14 team
at the time.
Florida's beating Ole Miss right now, 7-0.
We'll see how that game goes.
See how that game goes.
That'll be an interesting one.
Look, Florida, they were, I feel like, a
little bit on the come-up at the
end of last year.
We'll see what they do.
Florida, by the way, is after Red River.
I don't know if y'all realize that
or not, Florida is coming to Austin immediately
after Red River.
That is going to be a big game.
That's going to be a big game.
Florida, number 21 right now, if they beat
Ole Miss, that Florida game is going to
be massive.
It is right now a 7-0 lead
for the Gators, and it looks like, we'll
check this out, looks like the Gators have
the football again.
So they are driving again, or did they
just score?
Looks like they're driving again.
Here we go.
That would be big.
Florida could come to Austin.
I mean, they're 3-0 right now.
Florida could potentially come to Austin undefeated, and
that is another really big matchup.
Huge matchup for Texas.
The Longhorns do not have an easy path,
that is for sure.
I mean, look, Austin, Facebook comment earlier said,
just doesn't see how Texas is going to
stay number one all year.
I have a similar feeling.
I mean, I'm one of the biggest Longhorns
homers you'll find.
I try to cover the team as unbiased
as I can, but obviously, you see the
shirt I'm wearing, you see the hat on
my head, I'm definitely slightly biased, 100%, and
that might be putting it a little nicely.
But that to me is going to be
difficult for Texas, considering everything that they have
to go through this year.
I mean, you've got, let's just go through
it.
You've got Oklahoma.
Then after that, you've got Florida coming to
town.
You've got to go play Ole Miss, and
you got that a game at home.
Fortunately, you don't have to go to Oxford.
You got Ole Miss at home.
Mississippi State, you got at home.
They're number 24.
Missouri.
Texas has five straight games against currently ranked
opponents after Red River.
That is crazy.
I don't know that I realized this, looking
at the schedule, and I think a couple
of these teams have just come into the
fold, but Florida, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Missouri,
LSU, all ranked, and those are the next
five opponents after Red River.
It is an insane gauntlet of games.
Fortunately, the only ones you have on the
road, I know Oklahoma is technically like a
neutral site game, but that game to me
is not really any kind of road game.
You got half and half, and the last
couple of years, you've had mostly Longhorns fans
with how badly Texas has found a way
to embarrass OU out there.
Florida at home, Ole Miss at home, Mississippi
State at home.
On the road in LSU is going to
be the tough one against Kiffin and the
Tigers.
Missouri in Columbia, no disrespect.
I can't say I'm as worried about that
one, but Missouri, they look to have a
decent team this year.
Arkansas in A&M to end the season.
If you're being very, very technical, which we
will be, six of the seven opponents to
end the season are ranked.
Six of the last seven opponents are ranked
to end the Longhorn season.
Arkansas, the only team after Red River that
is not currently ranked.
It's going to be tough.
Texas is going to have to earn it.
That's why I think you're so relieved and
elated, but you're relieved that they beat Ohio
State because you just have margin.
You have some margin for error.
If you drop a game, and you don't
want to, but if you do drop a
game to one of these teams, it's not
the end of the world.
Now, you probably can't lose three games.
I think last year taught us that well.
You're probably not going to be able to
lose three, but you could lose a couple
games and still be in the mix very
firmly for a college football playoff spot.
Texas is definitely, Jose, I'm with you on
this.
They're definitely going to get everybody's best shot.
It's very well said.
Good TikTok comment there.
Another comment from TikTok.
Bro, offense looks so bad, and I'm a
Texas fan.
They don't look great, and that does fall
on Sark.
It is weird that this continues to be
a thing.
Sark, this offensive guru, and you've got the
number one recruit in college football and Arch
Manning, and you're not able to be consistent
on offense.
You have some nice games occasionally, but you're
not able to be consistent on offense.
It's just a little mind-boggling to me.
I think, though, they've shown you what they
are.
I keep going back to this.
They've shown you who they are with Arch
Manning and Sark at the helm of the
offense, respectively.
Limited.
This is not going to be a team
that is going to get 350 yards through
the air and 100 on the ground from
Arch.
That's just not how the offense is set
up, and it's just not a possibility.
I think you're going to see them just
continue to keep going to a balanced attack,
a lot of screens to set up things
later on, Arch occasionally using the legs here
and there.
I don't really sit around and expect an
offensive explosion from the Longhorns anymore.
I really don't.
To me, I think you expect great—scratch that,
reverse it—you expect elite offense from the Texas
Longhorns defense.
Excuse me, you expect elite defense from the
Longhorns.
Tripping over myself here.
Need another cup of coffee, I guess.
But I don't necessarily expect the offense to
ball out every single game.
I really don't.
I know some people, it feels like, are
banging their head against the wall every single
game.
I'm thinking to myself, are we expecting them
to hang 50 points on an SEC opponent?
Probably not.
It's not to say they can't ever have
a nice day at the office and score
five or six touchdowns, but it just happens
that way more often than not.
I agree.
I know the UTSA coach got a lot
of love after that game, and they are
well-coached.
I think you look at UTSA, they are
a well-coached team.
But man, that game should have felt more
one-sided.
Should have felt a lot more one-sided.
Brian, I'm with you on this.
Comment from YouTube here.
We're still getting so many flags, which kills
us.
Yeah, Texas today, the flags were ridiculous.
It was a ridiculous day with the flags
today for the Longhorns.
And that does reflect back on Sark.
Last night, we were talking about the Rangers,
and we were talking about Skip Schumacher, and
how when Texas makes mental mistakes, how does
that not reflect back on the coach?
Well, with football, when your team is undisciplined
and you have a ton of penalties, it's
nearly impossible for that to not reflect back
on the head coach a little bit.
Yeah, Sark can't control what everybody's doing out
there, but the lack of discipline is a
reflection on the coaching staff always.
Doesn't mean they have to take a majority
of the blame, but they can't get off
scot-free.
They can't have no accountability.
We had 11 penalties for 115 yards.
Salem, you're on top of it.
That's ridiculous.
Traylor, yes.
Tray, appreciate that.
Traylor, the UTSA coach.
He's a great coach.
I do feel like that started to get
a little bit overused and recycled to help
explain away why the game wasn't a little
bit more one-sided.
I don't care how good of a coach
you are.
At some point, there's a talent gap.
Traylor does a nice job with the Roadrunners.
I'm definitely not saying he's not a good
coach or he doesn't matter, but even with
a good coach on the other side, there's
such a huge talent gap between UTSA and
the University of Texas.
It should not have been that close.
There's no way.
RJ, what's good?
Yeah, the Simmons sack celebration comment from TikTok,
it was wild.
I'm glad he came back and balled out
the rest of the game.
Cowboy, I wonder.
I had a similar thought.
Cowboy, by the way, don't take this the
wrong way, but we'll edit the comments slightly.
We got all age ranges hanging out watching.
Bud, you do your thing.
Don't take this the wrong way, but I'll
edit the comment a little bit here.
Vet Muschamp is regretting signing up with Soil
the Bed Sark.
Yeah, I think Muschamp, it's an interesting thought.
What he's probably thinking and feeling as he
goes through this year, he doesn't get a
lot of airtime, but I did think to
myself, man, I do wonder what he is
thinking and where his mental is at with
all this.
I do think you'd love to see the
offense coming at a little bit of a
higher rate.
And obviously with Sark calling plays, he's going
to get a lot of the blame there.
He is going to get a lot of
the blame here.
Will the NCAA TikTok comment or question here
punish the defender for the pissing stunt?
I don't think so.
That doesn't make a lot of sense to
me.
You penalized him in game.
Why do we need a fine or something
additional outside, man?
If it's to the point where you have
to fine them along with penalizing them, what
are we doing here?
If it's not that serious where the player
has to be ejected, I don't understand the
fines after the fact.
Vicente, what's good?
Talked about this a little bit, so I'll
keep this on the short version.
And I can only speak from my own
experience.
Some of you guys know, and I don't
profess to having some elite football career or
coaching career, but I've been a football coach
for a long time, very low level, definitely
nothing crazy.
But my perspective was always this, when it
comes to one guy doing something stupid on
the football field and you get penalized for
it, it's one moment in time.
I'm just not a fan of making the
entire team suffer.
You just worked your butt off all week
long.
I'm just not a fan of making the
entire team suffer for that, for one moment
in time.
If it's not worthy of getting ejected out
of the game, I just don't think you
need to go there with the ejection.
I don't think you need to personally take
it upon yourself to bench him.
Now, do you make Simmons do some extra
work at practice, if you know what I
mean?
Yeah, I probably would.
I would have told him straight up on
the sidelines, look, we're not going to punish
your teammates.
We've worked hard all week and we're not
going to have this one moment ruin it,
but you're going to owe me a practice.
I mean, that's what I would have told
him.
And you know what?
I bet he would have probably said, no
problem.
I don't think there's a real big argument
there.
I just don't think you make all your
brothers on the team, all the kids on
the team suffer because of one impulsive decision.
That's not even worthy of ejection.
Uh, college game day, bros.
Thanks for the comment.
YouTube comment here.
Oh, line struggled.
We talked about it.
The old line.
I want to go back and I'll rewatch
some of the film on it just because
it's hard.
Like was one guy getting beat?
Was everybody getting beat?
It does feel like the old line did
not have their best game today.
Now, Tennessee absolutely started bringing more pressure in
the second half, especially, but it just always
blows my mind.
Like you would just think with all the
resources available to Texas, you would just think
that it would be a little bit sharper
offensively.
I keep going back to that.
I know this isn't rocket science.
I know this is such a simplistic thought,
but it's just wild to me year after
year.
Like, why can't we get a really good
old line every single year?
Why is that a variable from year to
year?
No disrespect to the guys that are on
the old line right now.
I think a number of them are very
high quality players.
Maybe it was just a bad game, but
you do kind of sit back and say
to yourself, and there's so much money getting
pumped into this football program.
How is the old line?
How are wide receivers, you know, even going
to running back quarterback play?
How are all these offensive positions from year
to year?
Such a question mark.
I don't know.
It just feels like it should be kind
of NFL factory with how much money Texas
has the old line.
100%.
They are B Salem.
Appreciate all the comments.
You've been awesome today.
The old line on paper, they've got some
high quality players like they do.
And that's why I just say, why can't
it all get pieced together?
And I know naturally some people go to,
you know, the coaching.
I don't think that's unfair.
What's good coming here as a boss fan
at the end when the hail Mary was
up, I think it was a holding call.
I mean, look, the hail Mary in the
end zone, it's always going to get a
little dicey.
It was a little handsy in the end
zone.
I'm definitely not going to say totally clean
play, but it rarely is on hail Mary
plays.
And I just don't think they're going to
make that call there.
I mean, even so, isn't it just a
15 yard penalty at that point?
I don't know if there's some weird college
football rule.
I know in the NFL, they put it
on the two yard line, but at that
point, isn't it just a 15 yard penalty?
So it's not like that would have made
a crazy, crazy difference.
I mean, they would have had one untimed
down from what the 35 or the 30.
I mean, maybe you end up kicking a
long field goal and winning the game, but
it's just, or tying the game, I should
say, and going to overtime.
The wind was a factor though.
I don't know that a 48 yard or
a 49 yard or would have been money,
but I will say they're just not going
to call a penalty a lot unless it
is egregiously bad, egregiously bad.
Uh, Dallas Cowboys hope you're right.
Comment.
Texas will regroup against the Sooners and win
big hook them horns.
I surely hope that Oklahoma is a stepping
stone to some really sharp, crisp play, especially
from the offense.
I gotta be honest with you guys.
I feel extremely secure and comfortable with how
good this defense is like Oklahoma next week,
even doing the show here live.
I kind of thought to myself, man, that
could be interesting, but you know what?
That defense is just going to travel.
And then against the Gators there, they're going
to play well against the Gators.
Like this defense is just so good.
I mean, I think they're definitely susceptible.
Sure.
They could have an off game, but I
feel a lot of security with the defense
more so in than I do insecurity with
the offense.
I don't know if you can assess that
honestly within yourself, Longhorns nation, but I feel
more secure in will much champs defense.
Then I feel insecurity for Sark's offense.
That that's where I'm at right now.
I think Sark's offense can be just good
enough to win you a football game, but
much champs it, you feel unbeatable with what
he's got.
Now the special teams unit nearly cost you
the game today.
You had a punt return for a touchdown
by the volunteers and you had a recovery
of an onside kick late in the game.
Special teams almost cost you today along with
the offense.
Now if special teams doesn't soil the bed
today, it's probably like a 20 to 10
game.
And I still think you're looking at the
offense with eyebrow raised, but it definitely would
have looked a lot cleaner had they not
allowed that touchdown on the punt return.
I definitely have to say if you can
just be average offensively, this defense is going
to carry you.
I know a lot of us are really
counting on Sark arch to put up, you
know, 40, 45 points every single time they're
out there.
You just have to be average offensively.
And the defense is going to win you
a lot of football games.
Curtis, what's good.
Who do the red Raiders even play or
did they already play?
I guys gotta be honest.
I'm locked into baseball and I lock in
on Texas and maybe some of the big,
big matchups around college football, but gone are
my days where I can just sit and
watch college football all day.
Unfortunately, I got, got those times in my
twenties now with the fam and, and right
on Rangers and everything.
It is hard for me to watch a
full day of college football tough.
I mean, look, if you can do it,
do it and enjoy it while it happens.
But I feel like I only get to
watch about two or three college football games
at most at absolute most every single day
to come.
So I don't think Texas is going to
fall in the polls.
I think the way that it'll work is
they were on the road, hostile environment, number
14 team.
I think that they're going to stay right
where they are.
They beat Ohio state.
Nobody has a better win than Texas right
now.
I just don't think they're going to fall.
I know that that's what everybody goes to.
Oh man, they, they don't look like a
number one.
Well, but what matters is what happened at
the end of the game when the clock
hit zeros.
And what happened at the end of the
game when the clock hit zeros is winning.
So I just don't think that Texas drops.
If they do, I'm not going to sweat
it.
I think it's a little ridiculous, might make
a video about it, but I'm not going
to sweat it.
It's all going to work out, but Texas
has done what they needed to do.
You survive in advance in the sec, especially
on the road and the sec, just not
a big fan of nitpicking road wins like
this and saying, well, they're going to fall.
Somebody said four or five.
They're not going to fall to four or
five.
What are we doing here?
They're not falling that far.
Now you go to the polls and you
just go to all the rankings here.
So you've got really, in my opinion, not
a lot of other options outside of possibly
like Ole miss.
I mean, I don't know who you're really
ranking one, Georgia, maybe Georgia.
They're close behind.
I don't think anybody's putting Notre Dame over
Texas.
At this point, we had a Notre Dame
fan drop by earlier.
I don't think anybody's putting Notre Dame over
Texas.
Sorry about it.
I mean, Ole miss is, I mean, they
were, they're losing 10 to nothing right now.
Ole miss is losing to Florida.
I told y'all that Florida game is
going to be big after red river.
That Florida game is going to hit you
in the mouth.
Florida might be five and Oh, coming into
that ball game in Austin.
I mean, but yet Notre Dame, I mean,
who have they played Wisconsin rice in Michigan
state.
We're putting Notre Dame number one.
Come on now.
Notre Dame has played.
Nobody.
What about Georgia?
Georgia has played Tennessee state, Western Kentucky and
Arkansas, and they're playing Oklahoma right now.
And it's 14 to nothing in Oklahoma.
I think we all can agree is not
very good this year.
Not a great team.
I'm sorry.
Sooners fans that maybe follow me for the
Texas Rangers.
Oh, you does not look like a great
football team right now.
Could anything happen in red river?
Yes.
Do I think it's going to, no, I
think Texas is going to win that game.
Again, the defense is way too good.
Way too good.
Look, Georgia's played.
Nobody.
Notre Dame has played.
Nobody.
Ole miss probably has the next best argument
beating LSU, who was, I believe a top
10 to is still a top 10 team
in the AP poll.
Indiana.
Don't think they've played anybody either.
Indiana has played North Texas, Howard, Western Kentucky
and Northwestern.
Indiana has played.
Nobody.
No one in the top five, except for
Ole Miss has played anyone of value.
Texas is going to be right in the
number one spot on Monday when the polls
come out.
There's no question.
Salem.
The offense just totally stalled out.
We ran the ball twice with Cooper.
And then after that arch got sacked, Cowboys
win 35, 17 tomorrow, man.
I hope so.
Did y'all see the pictures of the
field in Brazil?
And I get it.
They're trying to grow the game globally, but
come on now you've got to have state
of the art.
When you go and play in these different
countries, you cannot have anything shoddy.
If you don't know what I'm talking about,
go check it out on social media.
A lot of talk being made about the
field in Brazil that the Cowboys and Ravens
are going to play on tomorrow.
And I get it grow the game globally,
but you cannot skimp at all when it
comes to the players and the surface that
they're playing on the amenities on real grass.
But it looked like there was like fertilizer
still down on the grass.
It comes to, did you see that?
Do you know what I'm talking?
You know what I'm talking about?
It looked like there was like grass fertilizer
still like they're still hoping that that grass
can grow on that thing.
What are you guys doing?
That's what you needed to be doing like
five months ago.
Brutal, brutal.
All right.
Hey, look, we have a lot to go
through in a little bit of time.
I want to go through players of the
game, Colin Simmons on defense, Biles right behind
him, Biles, 13 total tackles on the day.
Simmons and Biles just dominated this one.
And it is going to be very comforting
having those two guys terrorizing, opposing offenses week
in and week out, regardless of the inconsistencies
with Sark and the play calling with Arch
Manning.
When that defense is cooking like they did
today.
And like they did last week and really
all season long, you're going to win a
lot of football games.
Even if the offense is doing what they're
doing, which right now, I think most of
us can agree on this a little bit
of under-performance that's putting it nicely.
In my opinion, I look 11 penalties for
115 yards.
Ridiculous.
That's absurd.
Texas, you know, they, they basically spotted Tennessee
more than a football field like that.
That is a ridiculous amount of yards to
give up when you just say it out
loud over a football field's worth of penalties.
That is something that they have to clean
up, especially with Florida and some of these
big teams on the horizon.
Arch was efficient today, in my opinion, but
you still left a lot of meat on
the bone offensively.
You just left so much on the table.
Arch was four, uh, 14 for 19, 201
yards.
I mean, 10.6 yards per attempt.
He did have an interception that I feel
like probably should have been caught by Kim
Coleman.
The ball kind of slipped through Coleman's hands,
a little bit of a battle with the
DB.
I don't know that Arch was terrible today,
but I can't say Arch was good today
either.
They only scored 20 points despite moving the
ball efficiently enough at different times.
Finishing problem is really what exists.
We were talking about that earlier today.
Texas, just the closeouts, man.
They're just not able to get it done.
Week in and week out, closing out football
games.
You really have to rely on the defense
a lot to ice games.
That's something I think you'd really like to
see change moving forward as Texas really gets
deep into SEC play.
Raleek Brown.
Let's talk about him.
Raleek maybe looked like he was seeding some
carries to Hollywood Smothers.
I thought after Hollywood's performance against Ohio State,
I kind of wondered, would you potentially see
Hollywood start becoming more of the lead guy?
And today, Hollywood sits out injury-related, health
-related.
Don't think he's going to be out for
a long time.
I think they were even talking maybe he'll
be back for but Raleek Brown steps up
in a big way.
17 carries, 67 yards, four yards a carry,
two touchdowns.
Good stuff.
Derrek Cooper, he really didn't get a lot
of opportunities.
Seven carries, only had seven yards.
He really wasn't able to get a lot
of traction, but Raleek Brown, impressive.
First touchdown gave Texas the early lead.
Second touchdown pretty much iced the game until
the special teams unit was just about to
soil the bed for us, soil the game
for us.
Yeah, RG, I'm with you.
Comment says Brown did his best being the
workhorse today.
He did his job.
He absolutely did his job.
Brown, 17 carries, man, four yards a carry,
two touchdowns.
He'll take that line every single time.
Special teams has got to get better than
what they were today.
You cannot be giving up punt return touchdowns
with how good this defense is.
That is such a backbreaker for a team
when you've got a defense that is playing
at an elite level, and then the special
teams can't get it off the field.
In fact, they give up a touchdown instead.
That has to get better.
We even talked about, I put out a
podcast early this week, and I said I
felt like the Longhorns had the advantage in
special teams in defense, and that was going
to be a big reason they would win
today regardless of whether or not Arch played
elite or just played average.
Today, the special teams did not play great.
That's something they have to clean up.
I think at the end of the day,
winning ugly, it still counts.
It's absolutely okay to win ugly in this
sport.
You don't want to make it a consistent
trend.
Don't get me wrong, but it's okay to
win ugly, and I think that needs to
be said out loud.
Nobody's going to be giving this win back
at the end of the year.
You're going to see 20-17, the committee's going
to see 20-17 on the road against a
top 15 opponent, and that's really all that's
going to matter.
It's like hitting a swinging bunt for a
single.
You look at the box score.
Could it be a line drive?
Could it be a hard hit shot?
Who knows?
It doesn't matter.
At the end of the day, you got
it done.
Next up, Oklahoma.
I think the bye comes at a pretty
useful time.
You got a big game against a big
rivalry, a big opponent, and Oklahoma, although not
playing great right now, they absolutely can make
something happen in a game like Red River.
Defense, I think, is going to travel well
to the Cotton Bowl.
I'm not worried about them at all.
You just hope the offense can be a
little sharper, but I really don't have a
humongous worry going into this game.
A little bit of the things can get
weird.
It's Red River, but if you just really
look at each team, what they do well,
what they don't do well, Texas should win
this game by double digits comfortably, maybe even
three possessions or more.
I don't say that arrogantly.
I just think Oklahoma at this point, you're
getting the break speed off you by Georgia.
Looks like Oklahoma is knocking on the door,
though.
It's 14 to nothing in the second quarter.
OU has just not looked like a great
team.
Anything can happen in Red River at the
Cotton Bowl, but I think Texas wins that
game by double digits.
I'll definitely be doing a pod previewing that
next week, next weekend perhaps, but that's where
I'm at with the Oklahoma game right now.
All right, y'all.
Today told me Texas defense is absolutely real
enough to travel into any hostile environment in
the SEC and win a game.
Still unsure about whether Texas can clean up
the penalties.
It's been something week to week.
You've kind of thought they would improve, but
they've got to clean this up.
And then the next thing I'm watching, what
does Texas do with two weeks before Oklahoma?
What are they really going to try and
accomplish in this bye week?
You've got guys, I'm sure, that need to
get healthy.
You've got guys that absolutely are going to
need to get right in that regard.
But man, I hope that they have a
good game plan, a solid game plan for
this next two-week stretch.
All right, y'all.
Hey, look, I will be back on later
today.
I cover the Texas Longhorns on the show,
and I cover a couple of other DFW
sports like the Mavericks and the Cowboys too.
So if you follow today for Longhorns, just
know you'll see some different teams, some different
sports coming across your feed.
Look, appreciate you hanging out.
Appreciate you following today if you did.
But just fair warning, I always say, man,
if you're not a fan of the other
teams that I cover, come and talk some
friendly trash.
Come and hang out.
You guys know I'm pretty flexible.
Some people have brought up Rangers even on
the show today.
It's never a big deal to me.
So just keep that in mind.
But later today, we will be back on
to cover the Texas Rangers and talk about
their game.
They are a game technically out of the
playoffs.
So last weekend of the regular season, it's
going to be great.
Salem defense with the W.
Absolutely.
Michael, no, let's not go twins.
Let's not go.
Michael goes throws.
Oh, geez.
Frozen Rangers are having a tough time figuring
out who's going to win this.
Hey, Robbie, thank you so much.
And guys, thank you to all you for
hanging out.
Look, I know I got a little hacked
off in the comments section, but you guys
know I appreciate you and all the support
you give to the show.
And the the the upsetness comes from just
the fact that if you know me, you
know that the reason I started this is
because I love the interaction and never hesitate.
Send me a DM.
Send me an email.
Some people email me.
It's just Austin that right on Rangers dot
com.
I'm more than happy to talk ball with
anybody, anybody.
All right.
Have a great rest of the day.
I appreciate the gifts.
Thank you so much, man.
Seriously, not needed, but much appreciated.
The generosity is crazy.
Thank you.
I will definitely never take anything like that
for granted.
Whether you're here, just hanging out, commenting, giving
a gift, man, it's all appreciated.
Nothing taken for granted.
All right, y'all.
Robbie, thanks so much, man.
Thank you for the kind words.
And like I said, we'll be back here
in a couple hours for Rangers coming out
and talk baseball.
If that's your thing, if not, we'll maybe
see you in the next week or so.
I might do an off week live, if
you will, to talk Longhorns kind of podcast
style.
But I'll take some comments and questions along
the way, too.
So look for that.
Look for some content coming out to you,
some Longhorns content in the next week or
so.
But you go enjoy the rest of your
Saturday.
That's what I'm going to do.
Go watch some baseball.
Go watch some football.
Hang out with the fam.
It's going to be great.
And on that note, as I always say
to end every show, God bless and go
Rangers.
