You really question what the strategy was there

conversation today as Jacob Latz gets strike two

on a very nice change up low in

a way.

I mean, Cal Quantrill, phenomenal Cal Q continues

to be the best pitcher in the rotation,

best pitcher in the rotation.

I don't think that that is really debatable.

If we're just going off of merit and

what has been accomplished on the field this

year, Jacob to Grom obviously is Jacob to

Grom a little ground ball rollover.

Hey, right, right on cue, baby.

Didn't quite go to third base, but we'll

That has worked out pretty well for the

Rangers and Garcia this year.

Don't want him to be forgotten about.

Obviously, you're going to talk a lot about

Duran.

You're going to talk a lot about Corey

Seager, the offense, Cal Quantrill.

Let's not forget about Robert Garcia.

Gets his third hold of the year, and

he has been very, very good since coming

back.

I know he gave up a couple of

base knocks, but limited the damage all in

all, and got the inning to the ninth,

7-4.

They're making us believe again.

They keep doing this to us.

Right when you're about to give up, they

reel you back in.

That's why I tell y'all, I mean,

look, I've been real.

It's been looking bleak, but until they are

mathematically eliminated, we're covering them like they are

right in the thick of it, and here

they are.

You're one game out, and then you go

to the wildcard standings, and the Rangers still

have some noise to make in the wildcard

standings yet as well.

Right now, Rangers, after winning another one, they

are now two games back in the wildcard,

actually closer in the division than the wildcard,

although they do hold some tiebreakers in the

wildcard as well.

go that direction with this.

I would be shocked if it was actually

a decision that Skip made without injury being

a part of it at all.

I think they're going to come out and

say Cal was dealing with something.

I've been seeing a lot of this, and

I want to make sure we're all on

the same page here.

We understand that traditionally, four days rest is

normal, correct?

I've been seeing a lot of comments like,

he's only on four days rest.

That's normal.

Three days rest is not normal.

It's very normal four days rest.

Five days rest would mean you've got a

six-man rotation.

So, I don't understand.

I've been seeing a number of people in

my comments saying, well, he was only on

four days rest.

That doesn't make a lot of sense to

me.

That's normal for starting pitchers in the league.

I mean, occasionally you get an off day,

but three days rest is where you're pushing

it.

That's why everybody made such a big deal

about Mackenzie Gore starting that Astros game right

before the all-star break.

It's like, oh, he's on three days rest.

He's not on his normal rest.

Four days rest is typical for a starting

pitcher in the major league.

So, I don't really understand why that would

have been a factor.

I'd imagine it has more to do with

Cal dealing with some kind of injury of

some sort.

only four games.

about how Garcia's looked.

Always thought he was unlucky with his batted

like little two run, three run cushion, some

lefties coming on up.

I think that is big and he has

been doing well since his return from the

I think you got to be happy with

the depth that he has given you, especially

with how this bullpen has been so up

and down over the last couple of weeks.

under the impression that they were going to

be riding out the relief pitcher situation for

honest, but it is an enormous win.

Texas absolutely needed this one.

Corey Seager delivered in a huge way today

with three hits.

Quantrill gave them six strong innings, just 70

pitches, assuming he was dealing with something.

Young continues to matter immediately.

Josh Jung was also pulled, did a lot

of base running today.

Again, Rangers had a six run lead.

The bullpen though, this bullpen can't just be

like a little footnote anymore, man.

I think most of us are already on

this page, but I am getting really concerned

about this pen.

Evo, I think might give you a little

bit of stability, but he's still shaking off

some rust.

Robert Garcia, we've talked about him.

He's been good, but there's not a lot

of guys that you really, really trust in

this pen right now.

And we handed the bullpen a seven one

lead today and you end up hanging on

seven, six.

Yikes.

Look, celebrate the win.

We're going to talk about all the good

things about this win.

Don't get me wrong.

Absolutely.

We will.

But that finish was not comfortable.

And I think that the Rangers, if they

want to make any kind of noise here

late, they already are to an extent, but

if they want to make noise late and

better yet want to make noise in October,

this bullpen is going to be something that

has to stabilize.

They have to figure out who is going

to be giving them these middle innings.

Because right now it feels like on any

given day, it could be a meltdown.

It could be catastrophic.

I would love to see the Rangers figure

out the middle relief innings.

I think you'd feel a lot better about

where this team is at.

Let's go ahead and let's continue and we'll

check comments along the way.

Zeke does look great in center field.

I've been a big advocate.

I think Zeke could be your everyday center

fielder.

I know they don't want to give up

on Evan Carter.

Evan Carter had a nice play, a really

nice play today out in the outfield thought

he and Wyatt Langford were on a collision

course.

Thank goodness that didn't happen.

But Evan's had an elite season with the

glove.

The bat just hasn't been good this year.

And we're at the point where, dude, you

can't be taking up a lineup spot if

you're not going to hit.

Now, Evan Carter did have some hard contact

today, which is encouraging.

But right now you got to have results

offensively.

And you're just at a spot with Evan

Carter where if he's not going to hit,

I just don't know.

Just don't know if you are going to

really feel great about 0 for 3, 0

for 2, 0 for 4 every time you

pencil him into the lineup.

Evan is a great dude.

He's got a good ceiling, but right now

not meeting it.

I don't know how long the Rangers can

hang on there.

They went to Zeke Duran in center field

against the righty against Fott yesterday.

Thought that was interesting.

Zeke obviously against a lefty.

Eduardo Rodriguez starts again.

It's going to be curious how they use

Zeke Duran and Evan Carter moving forward.

I still think Evan Carter has value off

the bench.

I think we've talked about this defensively, late

game substitution on the base paths.

I think there's still value there for sure.

Carter does need a hard reset in the

offseason.

That is the plan.

I think he needs some kind of hard

You play the hot hand.

You worry about winning the next ball game.

And I think that the Rangers are starting

to do that.

I hope they are, but I know that

they're going to have to they're going to

have to fight some of the favorites.

If you know what I mean, they've, they've

definitely shown some cards.

You know, who this team wants to see

succeed.

I know Evan Carter is one of those

guys, but you got to play who's actually

producing for you right now.

Has last been shaky of late.

I feel like he's not doing the shutdown

anything anymore.

I would say he's not been as locked

down as what we were used to pre

all-star break.

That being said, I think he's still done

a pretty good job managing things over his

last seven games.

He hasn't been awesome.

A lot of traffic on the base pass

by his standard last 15 games, three Oh

six ERA last 30 games, still at two

21 ERA.

So he he's definitely not as dominant as

what he was when he was dealing in

May and in June, but nevertheless, still getting

saves, still finding ways to end ball games.

And it's really all you could ask for

at this point.

It's really all you can ask for.

All right, let's go ahead and let's move

on.

We've talked about Cal Quantrill a little bit.

We're going to get back to him, but

let's talk about Corey Seager.

Corey Seager picked a really good day to

look like Corey Seager, the Corey Seager that

we all know and love 458 feet on

the Homer plus the RBI single later, the

longest home run by a Ranger this year.

This is what Texas desperately needs right now

from Corey.

They don't need Corey's entire season redeemed in

two weeks.

You're probably not going to make that happen

anyways, but they need one of the best

players on the roster to look like one

of the best players on the roster.

There's something about watching Corey Seager go 458

feet deep that removes a lot of nuance

from that conversation.

That baseball got 100% obliterated and very

reminiscent of the World Series in 2023 when

Corey Seager went deep multiple times in this

ballpark.

Rangers have to like what they're getting from

Corey.

If you look a little bit wider at

what he has been doing over the last

week of baseball, eight for 30, four homers

over his last seven games with a 1.013

OPS.

Hello.

That's what we need from our star player,

Corey Seager.

Over the last 15 games, over the last

30 games, Corey actually has been hitting quite

well.

The OPS is over 900 in his last

30 games.

The OPS is over 930 in his last

15 games.

Things are going well for the Rangers star

shortstop right now.

Cal Quantrill, we discussed Cal.

Not sure what's going to come out post

-game, why they pulled him after 70 pitches.

We will definitely continue to monitor that, but

Cal Quantrill has become one of the safest

bets in this rotation.

I think he has proven himself to be

in 2026 the best Rangers starting pitcher.

He and Latz are probably going to be

duking it out neck and neck for pitcher

of the year.

It's going to be close.

Latsy has had an amazing season.

Cal Quantrill is going to make that a

very difficult award for the Rangers to give

out when the dust settles on the 2026

season.

Cal today, by the way, box score six

innings pitch, five hits, two earned runs, no

walks, four strikeouts.

Very efficient.

Easily could have gone seven if everything was

right.

Could have gone maybe even eight depending on

how quickly he made it through that seventh.

We'll assume that the pull was precautionary.

Maybe the pull was just to give him

a little bit of a break.

He got a six run lead.

Second earned run is definitely a little misleading

in terms of how the outing actually felt

because it was the inherited runner that scored

after he left.

Really when Cal left, it's a one run

game.

It's only after he leaves the game, you

have Tyler Alexander coming in behind him, giving

up the run there.

Beyond that, Cal came into today with a

289 ERA.

His previous five starts carried a 116 ERA.

These are like video game numbers.

It's like MLB The Show on rookie mode,

seriously.

He's been averaging six innings in that span.

Six innings a start.

It's not like he's just throwing five and

calling it a day.

He's giving you quality starts pretty much every

time.

This is no longer some nice little run

from Cal.

I have been on this train for a

while now.

This is one of the best pitchers in

baseball.

I think this is fair to say.

He's not very well known.

I don't think he's getting a lot of

love around the league.

If you just look at the numbers, you

take the names off the backs of the

jerseys.

Cal Quantrill is one of the best pitchers

in the game right now.

That is really not debatable.

Let's keep going.

Josh Jung, already looking important again.

He was very important to the Rangers' success

before the injury.

We were begging Texas to end the rehab

assignment early.

I think they did after that loss on

Friday night.

After they lost Friday night, I think something

finally clicked for them.

We only have 14 games left.

We need our best hitters in the lineup.

Novel concept, I know.

I mean, look, when Josh Jung hit that

home run earlier this week in Salt Lake,

Round Rock was playing in Salt Lake City

this entire week against the Bees.

When he hit that home run, I said,

give him an off day if you need,

100% running the bases, but you're watching

him rake up at the plate.

If you need to give him an off

day, great, but get him back for Friday

I think he did get hit by a

I don't know if that was the reason

they didn't play him on Friday night.

I think in their mind, they had a

plan.

We're going to play him for a week

down in the minor leagues, and we're going

to bring him back up.

They just really did not calculate that one,

why we wanted Josh Jung back as soon

like the emotional temperature with the bullpen is

definitely at a bad place right now for

Rangers are playing another tight game out of

nowhere.

Quantrill gives you exactly what you needed, and

the team finds a way to turn six

excellent innings into a survival exercise, right?

Six innings, a six-run lead, and we're

playing survivor football.

Survivor baseball, excuse me.

It's just totally, at this point, a reason

why you doubt a little bit whether or

not this team is going to be able

to pull it all together.

They have got to get this bullpen thing

under wraps.

Maybe it's Robert Garcia in a bigger role.

Maybe it's Nathan Eovaldi in a bigger role.

They have to find some bridge guys that

can bring it home.

Right now, it feels like all too often,

you're bringing in the bullpen arms and you're

almost bracing for impact, bracing for some kind

of lead to be given up, whether it's

a five-run lead, a three-run lead,

a two-run lead.

You're very on edge right now with this

pen.

I would love to see them stabilize a

little bit here down the stretch.

You're going to need it if you want

to make the playoffs and actually do something

special in the playoffs.

We've talked about young a lot.

They have this 12 game sprint, right?

And you're going to need Josh healthy.

You're going to need that bat in there.

Clearly he's not at 100% running, but

you need his bat back in the lineup.

Eovaldi, we talked through yesterday, worked

two and two-thirds innings in relief, first

appearance since August 7th.

A lot of rust.

It felt like for Evo and not sure

how Texas is completely going to deploy him,

but it's another legitimate arm.

I mean, however you slice it, it is

another legitimate arm.

And so I think you have to feel

good getting him back, getting Robert Garcia back.

It is definitely a plus.

And you just hope the Rangers can organize

it and can finagle it into winning baseball

in the seventh inning and the eighth inning

as they bridge it to Jacob Latz.

Now on deck is Boston Monday off day,

right?

But then you have Boston coming to town,

three games set.

Both probable starters remain a TBD.

I do believe it's going to be probably

Cody Bradford.

If my math is correct here, but who

knows, they may decide to do something a

little different.

It is a nine game homestand Boston.

Then you have Toronto and then you have

the Mets.

This is going to be a huge homestand.

Texas has to have, I think a six

and three stand to feel really good about

their chances late here in the season.

Seven and two would be phenomenal, but I

think you have to go six and three.

You've got to basically win these series two

out of three games.

That to me is really the standard and

the bare minimum here.

Got to figure out a way in that

regard.

Let's keep talking it through.

We have also, you know, Boston really coming

into this series.

As we look at the standings, you know,

Boston has won six of their last 10.

So a little back and forth.

I do believe right now they're still playing

Kansas city.

They just beat Kansas city.

It looks like, ah, hang on one sec.

Had to refresh.

So right now it is two to one

in the bottom of the eighth red Sox

are threatening.

They are playing at Fenway.

So Royals, not a great ball club, red

Sox.

If they win this game would be seven

of their last 10 coming into the series.

Look, the red Sox are a good club.

They are a good club.

And so the Rangers are going to have

their hands full.

I think that feels like the series that

you really have to get past.

Toronto's a good team, but the Rangers have

handled Toronto.

They've got to be going into that series

with some confidence.

You would think have to be Kansas city

is going to go to Houston after this,

by the way, they are in Boston right

now.

The Astros will match up against Kansas city

while the Rangers are playing Boston.

So there's that scoreboard watching is not going

to stop, but you just hope the Rangers

can keep on stacking the wins.

Just keep on stacking those victories, man.

It's hard to know.

I do think the Rangers in 2025 didn't

use him to his strengths.

I think they tried to make him a

guy that could match up against anybody.

And in reality, he looks a lot more

comfortable when he's matching up against lefties.

And so I do think Robert Garcia in

a lefty heavy role, most effective.

And I'd like to see the continue to

do that with him.

Now let's land this thing.

Texas today, today told me that they still

have enough good players to make this division

race uncomfortable on paper.

They've got a number of really good players

on this roster.

They haven't necessarily been playing to their standards

to their potential, but Texas does have enough

good players on this roster to make that

division race really interesting for the Astros.

Corey Seager can change a game.

Josh Jung immediately makes the lineup deeper and

then Cal Quantrill.

He's turned himself into a trustworthy starter.

There's no doubt about it.

And I think he is the Rangers best

starter this year.

That is for sure.

Still unsure about the bullpen, obviously who wouldn't

be.

And in September, and if we're fortunate enough

in October, the bullpen cannot be a question

Mark right now, they are.

We've got to figure out this pen.

Next thing I'm watching nine straight at home

coming up on Tuesday.

And you could possibly be tied for first

place with an Astros loss and a win

on Tuesday night.

Astros, let's see if they play tomorrow or

not.

Looks like the Astros are also off tomorrow.

So there's not going to be any opportunity

for Houston to gain ground while we're off.

Again, I'm thinking six and three is probably

the standard that you need.

If you're really looking to make a meaningful

difference in the standings and in the deficit

that you're currently in, in both the division

and in the wildcard race.

I figured it was going to be some

kind of injury and you know what, they

got the wind.

And so we don't have to scrutinize the

decision any further, but it does get frustrating,

These starting pitchers dealing with injuries, but we

are 150 games into the season.

I mean, it kind of makes sense that

you would have some struggles at this time

in the year.

It just sucks.

You know, you can't control it.

There's nothing you can really do about it.

It is what it is.

As we said, no one really scheduled at

this point.

Looks like the red socks on MLB have

Sandoval scheduled on Tuesday, Wednesday, Bennett, Thursday gray.

So we've got two lefties Sandoval and Bennett,

and then you've got sunny gray on the

Thursday night final game.

All night games, by the way, Thursday is

not a day game.

We got three night games in a row.

That actually is kind of nice when you

got a team like Boston coming to town.

Night games are definitely the way to go.

When you have a big market team, you

want as many people there as possible.

Rangers baseball down the stretch down this playoff

stretch.

Absolutely.

We are just about wrapping up the show,

my guy, but it is good to see

you as always, especially after a win.

Astros have the Royals and then above the

Rangers in the wildcard race, white socks guardians.

I would say that's pretty fortuitous.

And then blue Jays, Tigers, Tigers are not

a great team, but they're good enough.

I think they can make things interesting for

the blue Jays.

Blue Jays are playing at home.

So they do have that going for them,

but I think the Rangers have an opportunity

to gain some ground.

I think that this Boston series is probably

going to be your toughest one in the

homestand.

Toronto definitely is not a team to overlook,

but Toronto in New York, I think you

got to feel pretty good.

If you can win the Boston series, the

rest of the games in the homestand, you

know, baseball is a weird sport.

Anything can happen, but you've got to be

sitting back feeling pretty decent.

If you're Texas, this is a place in

global.

I feel that you have played well throughout

the entire season.

Would love to see the Rangers go at

minimum six and three on this homestand before

they head into that final road trip of

the season against the twins up in Minnesota.

And that's how we wind this down.

12 games left to go, y'all.

It is going to be an interesting finish.

All you can ask for.

I know I said this probably about three

or four nights ago, maybe longer.

I just remember last year around this time

and two years ago around this time for

sure, we were done.

The Rangers were eliminated.

There was not really any hope at this

point over the last two seasons.

After the Rangers won their first world series

championship, we've got meaningful September baseball.

And I know that some people are really

frustrated with this team.

I know that some people have been ready

to give up on this team.

I know some people want to see this

team restart and reset, but at the end

of the day, I don't know if you

can ask for anything better than playing meaningful

games in September down the stretch.

Is it because the AL is not very

good?

Sure it is.

Sure it is.

And I think that we have been very

real about this team's shortcomings along the way.

But what I would say is this, don't

let this team's flaws prevent you from cheering

them on.

That doesn't make a whole lot of sense

to me.

Don't let this team's flaws and don't let

the fortuitous American league around them prevent you

from cheering them on down the stretch here.

And we love this team.

That's why you follow them.

Because you love them and you want to

see them do well.

Now in the off season, I think the

Rangers have a lot of things that they

need to address, but let's stay in the

here and now.

You have something in front of you here.

You have an opportunity.

It doesn't mean the Rangers are going to

go far into October or even make it

to October, but you have an opportunity and

I'd love to see Texas take advantage of

it.
