deGrom, by the way,

the fastest right hander to two thousand

strikeouts in MLB history,

both games played and innings pitched.

Innings pitched, Chris Sale,

only one who's done it faster,

Sale being a lefty.

Randy Johnson,

the only one that's done it in fewer

games, also a lefty.

So deGrom,

fastest right-handed pitcher to get to two

thousand,

both in terms of games pitched and also

innings pitched.

Got to love it.

Jacob deGrom making history tonight,

and he caps it off,

puts the cherry on top with this

impressive outing.

Six innings pitched, one hit, one walk,

ten strikeouts.

I mean, look,

we throw around vintage deGrom quite a

bit.

This is vintage deGrom.

I mean,

this is what he would do maybe five,

Throwing one or two innings more back in

the mid-twenty-tenths for the Mets.

But, I mean,

this is just what you grew accustomed to

seeing from him.

And so when we throw out vintage deGrom,

I think this is the stat line you

got to look at, man.

Giving up just about nothing,

striking out double digits.

Impressive outing from him.

We put a little pressure on him on

the show yesterday.

And really ever since the deadline,

Nicky Lopez, I think,

is going to get the job done here.

Fly ball to center field,

Duran hustling home,

and he is going to make it just

fine.

Rangers get an all-important insurance

run.

Nicky Knox, you know,

no base knock right now,

but a productive out.

He's able to get Ezekiel Duran,

who tripled just a few moments ago,

able to get Duran home,

and the Rangers double up the lead.

They now...

are in front of the Nationals two to

nothing with Jacob Latz getting loose,

ready to come in and close this one

out.

Rangers have one more out to work with

Look, going back to deGrom,

we put some pressure on him, man.

You stepped up after the trade deadline.

You didn't want to leave Arlington.

Braves apparently had a deal ready to go,

and you decided to veto.

You decided to exercise the no-trade

clause.

You came out afterwards,

and you talked about this team,

how you believe they can win.

You want to win here.

And sure enough,

he comes out really the past couple of

outings, and he has really pitched well.

You definitely don't love the injury

stuff.

And look,

hopefully everything afterwards...

goes okay, checks out health wise.

deGrom going out and giving you this in

a rubber match against an opponent that

really took advantage of you the night

before.

Last night's game was ugly.

Tonight, look,

still three outs to be gotten here,

but you like the chances with an all-star

closer, Jacob Latz, coming on.

But once more, Jacob deGrom,

got to give him his flowers.

some of the incredible efforts.

Jacob deGrom is obviously number one on

the list, but let's talk Ezekiel Duran.

I mean,

Duran comes up with the big knock there

in the bottom of the eighth, the triple,

to get the Rangers the insurance run.

And then before that,

I think it was in the Junis inning.

So was that the seventh inning?

Yes, it was.

Zeke had a very nice diving stop to

his left to prevent a leadoff single.

And Junis would go on to walk,

I think, two hitters after that.

So you could have potentially had bases

loaded with nobody out.

Had you not had that diving stop in

the seventh by Ezekiel Duran.

I just don't know.

I really do mean this genuinely.

I'm not trying to get clicks, hot takes,

none of that.

I just don't know how you go back

to JJ at third base.

It just looks so much better when it's

Duran, when even it's Cody Freeman.

It looks so much better down there at

third base at the hot corner.

Can you get creative?

You're not going to take JJ's bat out

of the lineup.

Don't get it twisted.

Can we go to jock full-time first base

when you have a righty on the mound?

Berger, I'm sorry.

You know, I'm not necessarily DFA or,

you know, send him to Round Rock,

but I am Platoon.

he definitely is a different hitter

but I think you got to get creative.

You know, Josh Jung, all-time DH.

I'm sorry, Justin Foscue.

I don't really care about the two hits

I think that the Rangers are going to

have to chew on this.

It has been a treat to watch Ezekiel

Duran fly around the left side of that

infield.

He's left a couple out over the plate

Lats, look, by and large,

you look at the big picture,

clearly he's been one of the best relief

pitchers in the game.

Of late,

maybe not quite as sharp as what you're

used to, but still getting the job done.

I mean, healthily getting the job done.

Puts one in the dirt here,

Feel a lot better with the Rangers getting

that insurance run.

You really do feel a ton better about

that.

You have a one-run lead versus a two-run

lead in this ninth inning.

It's not rocket science,

but it just allows you to pitch a

little bit differently.

It frees you up.

I know he's basically like a trade

deadline acquisition.

If you're talking to Chris young strike

consistent on Jock.

Clearly, he's been crushing it this year.

He's in a little bit of a rut

right now, Joc Pederson is.

Numbers are dipping just a little bit.

But, I mean, by and large,

Jock's been one of the best hitters on

the club.

I don't think the criticism last year on

a two-year contract was unwarranted.

I think Joc Pederson...

was bad enough last year that you really

needed a gargantuan performance this year

for the contract to be worth it.

And I'm not saying this to knock him

down a couple of pegs,

but I don't think that you're getting a

Barry Bonds gargantuan type performance

from Jock.

Is it nice?

Yes.

But the reality is he still only plays

against righties.

let's do a little deGrom legacy chat here

just for a second.

You guys know what page I'm on,

This can be said multiple times.

It's that important.

A lot of people like to talk about

Jacob deGrom and the Hall of Fame.

John Smoltz was doing it on the Fox

broadcast, what,

just about a week and a half,

two weeks ago.

And, you know, talking about pitcher wins.

And I don't know if we talked about

this a ton,

but you kind of had John Smoltz gassing

up pitcher wins.

Like, oh, you know, Jacob deGrom,

he really doesn't give himself a lot of

opportunity exiting the game in the fifth

or sixth inning.

Like, not untrue, but like, dude,

nobody's on the page that pitcher wins are

like some monumental stat anymore.

Like, are they cool?

Sure.

Like, if there's a twenty game winner,

are people impressed?

Yeah,

I still think people do raise their

eyebrows at a twenty game winner.

But I mean,

you're talking about Jacob deGrom being

the fastest right-handed pitcher to ever

reach two thousand strikeouts.

It feels weird not to be more convinced

that this guy is going to be in

Cooperstown one day in the Hall of Fame.

I don't know why it's such a big

debate.

I think to Cy Young's,

the just era of dominance that deGrom had

in the late twenty tens,

even into the early to early twenty

twenties as well.

I know his Texas years have not been

quite as dominant.

But nevertheless, still pretty good.

The career ERA is ridiculous and.

The strikeouts that he has accrued over

his career speak for themselves.

The tier that he has reached at this

point in his career, I mean, yeah,

would a couple more seasons of good

baseball help Jacob deGrom's case?

Yes,

but I just don't understand why it's such

a big debate.

Jacob deGrom is a future Hall of Famer

to me.

Don't think he's first ballot.

Let's not get crazy.

I don't think he's first ballot.

Maybe.

Depends on what he does, I guess,

the last couple of years of his career.

But I don't think he's first ballot.

But I just don't think it's as big

of a debate as some people make it

out to be.

This guy is one of the best pitchers

to have ever done it.

Again,

fastest right-handed pitcher in the

history of the game to two thousand

strikeouts.

What?

I mean, like, just let that sink in.

How many righties have pitched in this

game over a hundred plus years?

It's wild.

There have been thousands of pitchers that

have graced MLB mounds over a hundred and

fifty years.

And Jacob deGrom is the fastest

right-handed thrower to ever reach two

thousand strikeouts.

It's incredible.

Such an accomplishment.

I know we had to go through it

quickly in the game,

but it blows my mind how impressive that

is.

And so again,

when people start talking about deGrom,

definitely not being anywhere close to

Hall of Fame status.

What are you talking about?

This dude is one of the most lethal

righties to have ever graced a Major

League mound.

The game's changing.

Pitcher wins, things like that.

They're not as important anymore.

You got to contextualize it.

Jacob deGrom played for the Mets.

They were terrible.

They're still terrible.

They've had a couple of good years here

and there.

When Jacob deGrom has made it to October

and been healthy in October,

he's pitched well.

I don't know if you can hold rings

against him.

I do agree if he got another ring,

sure would be helpful.

Not sure he's going to do it with

Texas or not.

I'm hoping.

Clearly, I'm hoping.

But man,

I would be remiss if we didn't spend

five to ten minutes just showing deGrom

some love, giving the man his flowers.

The middle relief tonight scared me.

Can we just have Latsy go seven, eight,

nine?

Like, please.

I was not prepared for any kind of

drama from the middle relief crew.

And sure enough,

you had a bunch of zeros get thrown

up right on cue.

You had Junis come in,

was a little bit curious that they went

Junis first and then they went Silseth

second in the eighth inning.

Maybe there were some matchup things

there.

That would be an interesting question to

ask Skip.

Were there some matchup concerns or were

there some matchup advantages that you

liked going into that seventh,

eighth inning that made you use Junis

first?

So Seth was the one that probably worried

me the most.

I think he has been a little volatile

since becoming a Ranger,

since coming over from the Angels,

but he was the lowest drama.

Lats, maybe,

I guess you could put him up there,

but so Seth didn't allow a base runner.

Two strikeouts, piece of cake, man.

Good for him because it feels like Silseth

has been one of those classic,

as I like to call them,

barf bag pitchers.

Every single time they come into the game,

you're buckling in the seatbelt,

you're getting the barf bag ready,

you're taking those deep breaths,

and you're just praying that he doesn't

get burned by the traffic that he has

created on the base paths.

Lori with you, a hundred percent comment,

is so grateful for Lats.

He's been a godsend.

We're talking about not taking Jacob

deGrom and his career for granted.

Jacob Lats has been a godsend.

One hundred percent.

I am just so impressed by what he's

been able to put together over the course

of the first, what,

one hundred and thirty games or so.

Incredible.

Having a career year.

you just hope this is not lightning in

a bottle for Latsy.

He definitely is going to have some tape

out on him after this year.

I don't want to think too far ahead,

but you imagine with all of the film

that's out there on Jacob at this point,

he's probably going to have to make some

adjustments next year.

The league will adjust a little bit.

He really didn't have a lot of tape

when you think about it.

He had some innings,

some starts here and there,

but

There's a lot of tape on Lats at

this point.

Curious to see how he continues to make

adjustments and continues to refine his

game.

But man, I will agree with this.

You had stretches where guys looked good

and then you had stretches where it was

with who's it going to be,

who's going to step up,

who's going to decide that they're going

to dominate a little bit.

Let's talk a little bit offense here.

We already got into it a little bit.

We talked about Josh Jung coming back.

Obviously, that's going to help a lot.

I don't think that it's going to make

this a night and day elite offense,

but I do think that the Rangers will

largely benefit from Josh being back in

the lineup.

I mean, look,

he has one of the top five averages

in the American League.

Clearly, he's going to help

That being said,

I don't expect Josh to be some kind

of savior.

And I really do hope the Rangers will

take the prescription that I have laid out

before them for this entire scenario with

Josh coming back.

My prescription is this.

Jake Berger has been a sub-seven hundred,

maybe even a sub-six-seventy-five OPS

hitter against righties this year.

And we're talking below league average.

Why not platoon him?

Let Jock play first base against righties.

Move Jock out of the DH spot.

Have him play first base.

Are you dipping a little bit defensively

with Jock at first base?

Sure you are.

But let's have JJ be more of an

everyday DH type.

We know that he's got a little bit

of an injury history.

I know some people want to debate whether

or not he's injury prone or just really

unlucky or maybe both.

I'd like to see JJ be more of

an all-time DH type.

Foscue, I'm sorry.

I've argued with a number of Rangers fans

about this.

Justin Foscue, he had a nice game tonight,

had a couple of hits,

had the little Texas leader double that

went down the right field line.

Good for him.

I'm not rooting against Foscue,

but I'm also not going to pretend like

Foscue is irreplaceable.

I think you have to consider making JJ

more of a DH type.

But I don't know if this team is

innovative enough.

I know that that comes across maybe a

little disrespectful.

I don't know if this team is innovative

enough to do something like that.

And maybe they've kicked it around,

but they just don't strike me as a

team that's willing to make some radical

changes.

And that would be a radical change.

You're moving Jock out of the DH spot.

You're platooning Berger.

Not a plan that you really had going

into the season.

I would like to see that happen.

I think that would be a way that

you could keep better defenders on the

field.

I mean, Josh Jung,

for as much as we love the bat,

we've talked about this over and over.

The defense has not been good.

And by the way, Josh Jung,

not quite sprinting yet.

So he might not even be close.

We might be talking about this for

nothing.

We might be talking about this for

absolutely no reason at all.

And it is worth mentioning,

Foscue defense is bad.

I mean, this has been well profiled.

I was actually reading a couple of tweets

from some of the minor league guys that

I follow.

There's a lot of good ones out there.

But basically, the comment was,

the glove's terrible.

Second base is about the only place they

trust, Justin.

And even there,

you don't feel great about the gloves.

And it goes along with what we were

talking about the other night.

There's just so many one-dimensional

players.

Either they are only good at defense,

they're only good at offense.

It's just very one-dimensional at times.

We have a lot of guys that don't

throw very well,

don't have very good arms,

especially out in the outfield.

A lot of one D players.

And I just would love to see moving

forward.

We talk about rebuilds and the Rangers

will have to rebuild it either on a

large scale or on a smaller scale.

At some point,

I'd love to see this club really draft

for versatility,

really draft for multiple facets of the

game.

Don't fall in love with the dude that,

that just has the bat.

I know it's easier said than done,

but man, you'd rather take,

like if Josh Jung is a ten out

of ten with the bat,

I'd rather take an eight or an eight

point five with the bat,

but plays really good defense and can fly

around the bases.

I'd love if the Rangers could get a

little bit more well-rounded on the

roster.

We'll see what they decide to do.

Josh Jung, by the way,

congratulations to him.

He did get engaged.

The comment section in some of those

pictures that the two of them put out

were pretty funny.

I know some people weren't having it taken

away too seriously, but yeah,

go to some of the Josh Jung engagement

four games.

Seager, when he is hitting,

it makes a big difference.

Now look,

tonight the Rangers still didn't score

very many runs.

I don't want to

you know, hype this game up like, Oh,

the lineup,

it's so much better when Corey's going

well.

I mean, some things are obvious,

but tonight they actually still really

didn't play very well offensively,

but fortunately you had really amazing,

outstanding pitching and you had a couple

of big swings that made all the

difference.

But Corey Seager hitting is definitely

something that gives you hope.

If you don't have a hot Corey Seager

going into September, going into October,

uh,

you're not feeling great.

You're not feeling great about a run.

I mean,

you kind of always are going to wonder

with Corey, man,

when the calendar turns to October,

is bro just going to turn it on?

Like he does kind of strike me as

a guy who, man,

get that guy to October and he's going

to figure it out.

I don't know about you guys.

I've actually been thinking about this the

past couple of days.

But, you know,

there are some guys who you don't feel

that way about at all.

But I feel like Corey kind of does

have that mystique

He has a bit of that mystique.

I think he could do it.

He didn't maybe have a great regular

season,

but the guy just knows how to perform

in October.

I could see that kind of situation playing

out with Corey.

I really could.

It would not shock me in the slightest

judging defensive play, right?

There's a number of plays that are on

the infield

And it gets determined that the infielder

didn't make an error.

It would have been a base hit when

probably it wouldn't have been.

I would submit, you know,

let's stop using errors as the measuring

There have been so many plays this year.

If you've watched over the course of one,

twenty seven, whatever they're at,

one twenty eight.

There's so many times where a guy gets

a base hit and you're like,

how did how did they not give an

error on that play?

How did they not?

Errors are just not to be trusted.

You have to look at some of the

advanced stats, outs above average.

You have to look at the fielding value.

There's other things that I think you

should be more invested in than errors at

this point.

signature run yet.

gamers where you're kind of starting to

What's their season long?

I feel like they've won five or six

in a row for sure.

I don't think they got to seven.

Feels like they're missing just that

steady run where they're just dominant

totally untapped at this point.

I think he's got a high ceiling.

is what Evan Carter is going to

consistently be over his career,

but I think he's better than this.

he's got to get back in the lab

in the offseason and try and mix some

things up.

What he's doing right now is not

completely working.

the middle of a season,

especially in the middle of a push to

make the playoffs.

I really do think, Evan,

the full reset might take an offseason.

kind of hyperbole, kind of exaggerating,

Evan Carter could probably go O for fifty,

and I don't think the Rangers would send

him down.

I think they have totally convinced

themselves, maybe rightfully so,

that the defense is too valuable,

the speed is too valuable.

the age-old Evan Carter debate happened...

and i say age-old affectionately because

we have had this debate many times on

the show i can't say i've seen it

a lot of places outside of my show

but it has been around my show for

a long time man and honestly you rewind

it all the way back to i believe

it was the third inning was it the

third or the fourth inning man

forget what it was it was the okay

it was the bottom of the second inning

Evan Carter bases loaded bottom of the

second inning and he goes up to oh

I believe in the count and then he

pops up to third base for the final

out then immediately very next at bat for

Nationals Evan comes up with a outstanding

defensive play

And the age-old debate with Carter is,

would you rather have the clutch RBI with

the bases loaded,

or would you rather have the defensive

prowess and the incredible web gem play

the very next inning, right,

in the top half?

I think I have been very clear what

side I'm on.

I mean, look,

the single that Evan Carter robbed there

in the top half,

it's possible that makes a big difference

in the game.

It might not with how Jacob deGrom was

throwing,

but I think most of us would say,

you take the clutch RVI with the bases

loaded.

I'll take a center fielder.

Maybe that lets that go on one bounce.

If in the bottom half of the inning

before he drives in a couple of runs

with a clutch base hit.

And I'm not saying that Alejandro Osuna

gets that done,

but I am saying Osuna has had more

clutch moments than Evan Carter this year.

That that's just the facts.

There's no other way around that.

Osuna, going back to a comment earlier,

Nate, appreciate you, man, as always,

Do you think we'll see Osuna again this

year is the question.

I would almost say it's criminal if we

don't.

It's criminal if they don't bring up Osuna

when rosters expand.

When rosters go up to twenty eight.

And I believe that's September first.

So roughly about ten or eleven days from

now.

Criminal if they don't bring up Alejandro.

And I'm not just saying that because I

love Alejandro Osuna.

You guys know,

and I've admitted it very freely,

one of the biggest Osuna homers you'll

ever find.

Love the guy.

Think he's awesome.

Don't think he is, you know, Ichiro.

But I do think that Alejandro brings great

energy to the clubhouse.

I think he's a good guy to have

in the locker room.

I think he gives you a professional AB,

unlike some of the guys we have right

now on the roster.

You don't feel like Osuna's over his skis

when he goes up to the plate.

You just don't.

My choice would be O'Hoppe and Osuna.

I know Walcott is going to get a

little bit of press.

I just don't think with Walcott in his

current state with some of the injuries,

I think Walcott is probably better served

continuing on down in the minor leagues

until he is one hundred percent with the

fielding, with the throwing.

I know he's just doing a lot of

hitting right now.

And man,

it would be fun to see him.

I'm not saying that that it wouldn't be.

But I just feel like at this point,

it's probably better to let Walcott stay

down.

and just get back to one hundred percent

out in the field instead of making him

do that at the major league level.

Trust me, if they bring up Walcott,

you're not going to see me complaining.

But I do think the right move is

let's let Walcott make the team out of

spring training.

There's no guarantee he's going to come up

and crush it.

And if you're not sure that this team

is really going to go deep into October,

do you really want to start the clock

on Walcott?

It's going to be tough.

It's going to be tough.

But I do think Osuna,

O'Hoppe are probably your two call-ups.

O'Hoppe is a nice third catcher option.

And he can also be a guy that

can be a right-handed pinch hitter off the

bench for you if he's not starting.

You feel pretty good throwing him into a

spot like that.

He is hitting pretty well at AAA right

now.

And I put out a video on O'Hoppe

probably two or three days ago.

And the main point of the video,

if you didn't see it,

is they can track his progress in AAA.

Is he doing the little things that they

wanted him to do to get better?

but they really need to give O'Hoppe an

MLB audition.

I don't want to see the Rangers go

to the offseason without having auditioned

O'Hoppe in the bigs.

You had the whole season before you traded

for him to look at,

but then you had him spend roughly a

month down in AAA.

working on a variety of things offensively

and defensively.

You don't want to go into the offseason

without knowing what O'Hoppe is going to do

for you at the major league level after

these little tweaks and adjustments that

you've asked him to make.

I don't want to go into the offseason

with hope as my one piece of evidence

on O'Hoppe.

Man, he did great in AAA.

I sure hope that translates to the major

league level next year.

I don't want to hope.

I want to know.

Man, he spent a month in AAA,

and then he came up in September when

they expanded rosters,

and he raked in September,

and he really made some big strides.

And now going into the offseason,

you feel a little bit more sure about

O'Hoppe.

If O'Hoppe crushes it the rest of the

year in AAA,

that's only going to go so far for

me.

And I would encourage you to feel the

same way.

I just don't feel like you can sit

here and be convinced based on AAA stats

when it comes to guys like O'Hoppe.

If it's a fresh prospect like Walcott,

obviously you have nothing else to compare

it to.

But for a guy who's been in the

bigs like O'Hoppe,

I want to see what he can do

for a month after spending a month down

in AAA, improving,

getting that little extra year of control

in there too.

I want to see what he can do

in the bigs before we make some kind

of big decision about the future of the

catcher position in the offseason.

Nobody would have to get sent down because

the rosters expand Kachow on September

first.

So on September first,

you can call up a couple of guys

that are on the forty man.

Now,

are they going to spend it on two

hitters?

I probably say no.

I feel like maybe they will.

Maybe there's nobody down at AAA that they

really feel good about,

but I almost feel like they're just going

to call somebody up to have an extra

arm.

So I don't actually think it's going to

be both those guys.

Now,

they could do something drastic with the

catcher position,

but I don't think it's going to be

both of those guys.

I really don't.

I think it'll be one pitcher,

maybe one of the young guys that already

came up, and then maybe Osuna as well.

There are other guys that you could DFA

or get rid of, don't get me wrong,

but...

We'll see what they decide to do.

but wasn't really the guy that he became

in certain stops along the way,

but I think deGrom is a Hall of

Famer, no doubt.

I don't know why it gets talked about

so much.

The tricep scare, thankfully,

didn't carry into the stuff tonight, man.

Six scoreless, ten strikeouts.

Serious answer for Jacob deGrom with that

injury scare that he went through with the

tricep and his last start.

Still unsure about this lineup.

I don't think that's a shocker to anybody.

Can they give elite pitching run support,

especially in really,

really tight games closer to October,

inching closer to that?

I definitely feel like you've got to see

something positive from them here over

this stretch to really feel like Texas can

do something special this season.

This lineup has not been able to

consistently produce.

And maybe getting healthy, Josh Jung,

that'll help.

But it's been bad.

Two runs tonight, not great.

You get a win.

That's all that matters.

But I think you got to be a

little concerned about the offense.

Next thing I'm watching here,

just continuing to see how the bullpen

responds.

They did really well tonight.

You had Silseth,

you had Junis really locking it down.

Of course,

Jacob Lass is going to do that.

Let's see how the bullpen continues to

respond in these tight games.
